Glorious Goodwood Wednesday Tips: Close At Hand a big-priced fancy on day two

Will our luck turn on day two?

The rain scuppered Tony Calvin's bets on day one of Glorious Goodwood, but undeterred he continues his search for value bets at the big meetings and makes these three picks on day two in Sussex

"I really like Close At Hand's chances from stall three, I think she needs this extra furlong, and I was expecting her to be near favourite.
Back her at 11.010/1 or bigger."

Back Close At Hand at 11.010/1 or bigger in the 16:50 at Goodwood

The six hours of rain before racing at Goodwood on Tuesday put something of a dampener on proceedings, and changed the nature of the racing to a fair degree.

Certainly, it was not ideal for my nap of the day, Reroute.

But some poor selections, too, so all-in-all a bad start to Goodwood with the highlight of the day a non-runner. . But no point crying into our Pimms - if you tip at big prices you have to take a run of losers on the chin - after day one of five at the meeting.

And unless there is a similarly unexpected spell of baking sunshine on Wednesday morning, at least we go into battle again on day two, knowing we should be looking for horses who like a bit of ease in the ground, or good going.

The problem with the three main Channel 4 races is that they appear to have a very unappealing betting shape to them for punters, with all being seven-runner contests with no win and place angle.

It could well be that Cap O' Rushes is unjustly ignored in the betting in the Gordon Stakes, with punters and pundits assuming his four length fourth to Trading Leather in the Irish Derby, when he was used as a pacemaker, was a fluke.

However, that effort wasn't that far removed from some of his earlier efforts, being perhaps just a 10lb better performance than his decent fourth off a mark of 95 in the King George V handicap at Royal Ascot. So it was believable, especially as he doesn't have too many miles on the clock.

The Richard Hannon camp are very sweet on Toormore in the Vintage Stakes but he needs to improve a good bit to lower the colours of Coventry second Parbold, and maybe impressive Newbury winner Lanark as well.

I was a touch surprised to see Toormore and Parbold dominating the market to such a degree, but nothing at the prices tempts me in against them, though Lanark would be my choice if pressed.

The "Duel On The Downs" between Dawn Approach and Toronado in the Sussex Stakes at 15:05 is clearly the highlight of the week for many.

But I can't get excited by either, in truth, and if the ground does dry up appreciably on Wednesday then I would think that Declaration Of War is too big at 7.06/1.

His Queen Anne win and Eclipse second doesn't leave him with much with the 3yos, but Aidan O'Brien is convinced that his horse ideally wants fast ground.

Goodwood, 17:25
I really like the chances of Valonia in the 16:15, but we will focus on the handicaps, and My Kingdom in the 17:25 at 18.017/1 or bigger.

He makes a quick reappearance after proving no match for Colonel Mak over 6f at Pontefract on Sunday, but that was no disgrace as the winner was a very well handicapped horse on his best form.

So he is in good form, is fully effective at 7f on any ground, is well drawn in six, and he does run well at this track, with form figures here of 7210120.

In short, he looks very solid for a horse trading around 18.017/1.

Goodwood, 13:55
I am also going to take a chance on Seaside Sizzler at odds of 15.014/1 or bigger in the opener at 13:55 even though his draw in 17 is not ideal.

Good to soft or better ground would be fine for him, but he certainly wouldn't want any more rain, so bear that in mind.
But he is a guaranteed stayer who ran an excellent third in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Ascot last time.

He is fairly treated off 86, and finished runner-up in this marathon two years ago. I can also see High Office running a big race, but we will stick with just the one play.

Goodwood, 16:50
For my third and final bet of the day, I am siding with Close At Hand in the 16:50. In fact, she probably rates the best bet of the day, too.

I think she could have got in very lightly here on the balance of her form, which includes a Windsor maiden win last time and a second to Saucy Minx over 7f here on easy ground in May.

The winner went in next time in handicap company off a mark of 78, and Close At Hand is certainly bred to be better than a 76-rated handicapper, being out of a 1m2f listed race winner.

I really like her chances from stall three, I think she needs this extra furlong, and I was expecting her to be near favourite.
Back her at 9.08/1 or bigger.

I'll say it - I think she will win.
