There's plenty of quality racing about on Saturday and Tony Calvin has found five races where his highly-trained betting nose detects value. Here are his picks...
Neil Kinnock once said "loyalty is a fine quality, but in excess it fills political graveyards" - I obviously didn't remember that but it was a Google search on loyalty that best fitted my intro - and every punter has a horse that is a racing variation of the ginger-cum-bald one's quote.
To put it bluntly, I have done my absolutes - I wasn't allowed to say b*ll*cks as you may be reading this before 9pm - backing Fort Bastion on his last three starts.
But there is still enough left in the betting graveyard that was once a healthy Betfair account - I am not in the best recent form, as regular readers will know - to back the horse at odds of 21.020/1 or bigger in the 13:55 at Ascot.
The horse has been giving off mixed signals whether he wants 7f or a mile this season, and the jury is still out, in truth.
He flattened out a little disappointingly over 1m at York last time, but if you go back to his course and distance 8th here in July or his subsequent 6th at Goodwood - where he met trouble on both occasions - then I have to give him another chance off a mark of 95 in a race that is sure to be run at an end-to-end gallop.
He may be too exposed to win a race of this nature - Cornrow screams potential Group horse at the bottom of the weights - but I have to follow Fort Bastion into the betting graveyard once more given connections now try him in first-time blinkers.
In the other Channel 4 race, Penhill is of interest back down in trip in the 150k handicap at 15:30.
My shortlist consisted of him, Swivel and Rainbow Rock, but I will let the Johnston pair go unbacked and side just with Penhill.
He was on a roll prior to being stepped up to 1m6f in the Melrose last time and came there tanking 2f out looking sure to take a hand in the finish, before his run pretty much petered out straight away.
Back down 2f to a trip over which had previously seen rampant wins at Thirsk and Ripon, I'll give him another spin at odds of 15.014/1 or bigger. The stable had a welcome winner at Newcastle yesterday.
Over at Kempton, I don't fancy much in the September Stakes at 14:20 - although it is a cracking contest, with seven horses rated between 108 and 116, and really high class fare - but Musaddas could be worth a few quid at 11.010/1 or bigger in the 14:55.
I may be being a bit unfair, but he looks like that he could be saving a little bit for himself.
However, I think his third to Sloane Avenue over course and distance last week could turn out be very strong form - the winner is going places and the fourth was over 2 lengths away - so I have to be with him here, off the same mark and from stall one.
I greatly fear Glorious Goodwood runner-up Buckstay, and wouldn't put anyone off having a saver on him.
Music Master is another favourite of mine in the Betfred Sprint Cup but it was the wedding and not the funeral in the Hackwood Stakes at Newbury last time, where I had my biggest bet of the season on him at 7-2.
His winning distance of a neck doesn't at all indicate his superiority there and I will be backing him at 10.09/1 to win the big one at 15:50.
This is about as competitive a Group 1 sprint as you will find but his fourth in the Diamond Jubilee - where he travelled like a dream, but was detached and his rider went too early - convinced me that he has a big prize in him, given more patient tactics.
Hold on you hats, as he will be one of a number coming late and through M25-like traffic.
Short Squeeze could take the step up in class in his stride in the 14:40, but for my next bet at Haydock I go with Confessional at odds of 5.59/2 or bigger in the 14:05.
The case is strong and straightforward, as befits the price. He won this race off a 2lb higher mark last year, and his third in the Great St Wilfrid last time tells me that he is in the form to take advantage of it. He looks a deserving favourite.
Nothing really takes my eye at the prices in the Old Borough Cup at 15:15.
Be lucky. Or at least luckier than I am at the moment, at least...
