The Punter's In-Play Blog: Classy Chacarra assumes command

Get Steve's In-Play thoughts now

Play has been suspended at the DP World India Championship with plenty of golf to play in round three, but Steve Rawlings is back with his latest in-running thoughts on this week's DP World Tour event here...

19:20 - October 17 - Chacarra up by two in Delhi

Play has been suspended at the DP World India Championship with the final three-ball having only played 11 holes of their third round.

The halfway leader, Eugenia Chacarra, has extended his lead to two and he looks a fair price at a shade over even money on the Betfair Exchange, especially if he keeps his nose in front after the third round as the in-running stats at Delhi Golf Course suggest the 54 holes leader is going to take some beating.

There have been 36 tournaments played at Delhi Golf Club in the last 30 years and only one of the 36 winners, course specialist SSP Chawrasia, at the 2014 Panasonic Open, has begun the final round sitting outside the top 10.

Chawrasia sat tied for 11th and five off the lead before the fourth and final round, but every other course winner over the last 30 years has been inside the top six places with 18 to play.

Manuel Tabuena won the DGC Open here three years ago having sat tied for sixth and six off the lead, but he was helped considerably by course specialist, Rashid Khan, who shot 72 in round four having led by three with 18 to play.

Last year's winner, Tommy Fleetwood, sat solo second, trailing the 54-hole leader, Keita Nakajima by two, but nine of the last 11 course winners were leading or tied for the lead with 18 to play so it's clearly tough to make up ground here.

I won't be getting up in the middle of the night to trade the event but I'm very happy to have gotten the Spaniard onside this morning at 3.711/4 and I'm hoping he'll be odds-on by the time I wake up.

With the stats favouring the frontrunners so much, I should probably leave the event alone and see where I am with Chacarra tomorrow morning but the defending champion, Fleetwood, looks too big to ignore at 75.074/1 on the Betfair Exchange.

Fleetwood is very adept at closing from off the pace on a Sunday (he finished fourth in the Alfred Dunhill last time, beaten by three, having trailed by nine with 18 to play) and currently trailing by five, he's no bigger than 40/141.00 on the High Street.

08:20 - October 17 - Spaniard worth chancing with 36 holes to play

After around five hours were lost due to the weather on Thursday, the second round of the DP World India Championship has only just been completed.

The third round has just kicked off and the action is live on Sky from 08:30.

The in-form Spaniard, Eugenio Chacarra, was matched at as low as 2.3411/8 to win the DP World India Championship in the early hours this morning but a faltering finish to his second round has seen him ease out on the Betfair Exchange to a backable price of almost 11/43.75.

The 26-year-old looked like he might hold a commanding lead at the halfway stage but after back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15 to get to 11-under-par, Chacarra bogeyed the 16th before failing to birdie the par five 18th. Here's the 36-hole leaderboard with prices to back at 8:10.

Eugenia Chacarra -10 3.711/4
Scott Jamieson -9 30.029/1
Thomas Detry -8 16.015/1
Joel Girrbach -8 20.019/1
Joost Luiten -8 21.020/1
Adrian Meronk -8 22.021/1
Angel Hidalgo -8 24.023/1
Robert Macintyre -7 14.527/2
Brandon Robinson Thompson -7 70.069/1
Eddie Pepperell -7 70.069/1
Todd Clements -7 70.069/1
Rory McIlroy -6 12.011/1
-6 and 26.025/1 bar

The in-running stats at Delhi Golf Course suggest Chacarra, who won back-to-back events on the DP World Tour in June, is a very fair price at bigger than 5/23.50 on the Betfair Exchange.

Since the turn of the century, 23 men have held a clear advantage at the midway point of a 72-hole event at Delhi Golf Course and 11 of them went on to win.

That's a very respectable strike rate of 48% and if we look at one-stroke 36-hole leaders in isolation, that strike rate increases fractionally with four of the eight men that led by one through 36 holes going on to win.

Those stats would suggest that Chacarra should be a lot shorter than he is but we do have to bear in mind that he's been up early today, and in the unlikely event that they play fast enough to get the third round finished today, he's going to end up playing 31 holes in one day. Whether they get done or not, it's going to be a long day.

From the other side of the draw, Adrian Meronk, who's another recent winner in-the-mix again here, spoke about how knackered he was after playing almost two rounds yesterday so fatigue could well be a factor for the leader today.

Scott Jamieson, who won in his homeland at the Nexo Championship in August, is the only man within a stroke of Chacarra but it's the big guns, Rory McIlroy and Robert Macintyre, who trail by four and three strokes respectively, that the market views as the frontrunner's biggest dangers.

Although I do have concerns about the leader's ability to hit it straight enough off the tee here, and I'm also worried about the fatigue factor, I couldn't resist a small play on Chacarra at what looks a very fair price.

15:05 - October 16 - Star trio looking to make a big move early on Saturday

At this stage of the week, we should be assessing the 36-hole leaderboard at the DP World India Championship but after around five hours were lost on Thursday due to heavy rain and lightning, four groups haven't event started their second rounds.

Darkness has stopped play for the day, and play will resume early tomorrow at 06:45.

There are four men tied at the top presently, Adrian Meronk, Angel Hidalgo and Joost Luiten, who have all played their first two rounds, and Thomas Detry, who's played just six holes of his second round, but it's Eugenio Chacarra that narrowly heads the Betfair Exchange market.

The 26-year-old, who was very well backed before the off after his near miss in his hometown last week at the Open de Espana, sits tied for fifth and one back on -7 but unlike the two men alongside him, Eddie Pepperell and Todd Clements, Chacarra is yet to finish his second round.

Chacarra and Detry are at the head of the market, and both are trading at a single-figure price but that may well change by breakfast time tomorrow morning.

Chacarra has only played the first five holes of his second round and in the group behind him are the next three in the betting - Rory McIlroy, the defending champion, Tommy Fleetwood, and Robert Macintyre.
