14:15 - September 28, 2026 - Fitzpatrick wins by three in Paris

The pre-event 12/113.00 chance, Matt Fitzpatrick, looked impossible to oppose with 18 to play at the Open de France yesterday but after three rounds of impeccable golf and low scoring, the world number four needed to scramble brilliantly to keep bogeys off his card.

With Fitzpatrick struggling to get going, Kristoffer Reitan threw his hat into the ring with an eagle at the par five ninth and he was matched at a low of 6.05/1 in-running, but it was Eugenio Chacarra who put in the hardest challenge.

The Spaniard closed to within a couple of strokes with four birdies in his first six holes and he was matched at a low of 3.8514/5 but his challenge ended with a double-bogey six at the 13^th hole following a poor drive.

Fitzpatrick bogeyed the 72^nd hole but only after he'd picked up a couple of birdies at 13 and 15, so he eventually went on to win by three and he now heads to Scotland for this week's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.

The Betfair Exchange market has opened and Fitzpatrick, who won the event in 2023, is the favourite over fellow Englishman, Tommy Fleetwood.

09:10 - September 27, 2026 - Fitzpatrick shoots clear at Le Golf National

After rounds of 65, 64 and 65, Matt Fitzpatrick will take a five-stroke lead into today's final round at the Open de France. Here's the 54-hole leaderboard with prices to back on the Betfair Exchange at 9:00.

Fitzpatrick is the 12^th player to lead by five with 18 to play on the DP World Tour in the last 10 years and the previous 11 all went on to win.

In the last 30 years, 33 players have held a five-stroke advantage through 54 holes on the DP World Tour and only five have failed to convert, with Jean van De Velde's slip up at the 1999 Open Championship far and away the most famous defeat.

Given five-stroke leaders have an 85% strike rate over the last 30 years, although he looks shot at 1.21/5, Fitzpatrick isn't actually short enough and he's impossible to oppose at the price.

08:35 - September 26, 2026 - Leader layed at 11/8

I contemplated laying Matt Fitzpatrick to win the Open de France last night at 2.466/4, considering the price on the short side given his overall record when leading at halfway and the poor record of clear 36-hole leaders at Le Golf National.

Since John Bickerton won here 20 years ago, having led by a stroke at the halfway stage of the Open de France, 10 players have led by between one and six strokes at the halfway stage and Marcel Siem, in 2012, who led by one, is the only one of the 10 to go on to win.

A couple of players have failed to convert three-stroke midway leads and Rasmus Hojgaard finished second here in 2022 having led by six at halfway.

Fitzpatrick is a major winner and the number four ranked player in the Official World Rankings but now that he's shortened up overnight, I've felt compelled to take him on.

21:35 - September 25, 2026 - Thriston Lawrence the only play at halfway

Play was suspended on Friday evening at the Open de France with a couple of groups still on the course.

They'll return in the morning to finish off their second rounds but none of them are in contention.

Nathan Kimsey, who's one of those yet to play 36 holes, has driven off on the 18^th hole but he sits in a tie for 30^th and eight off the lead and he's the closest player to the lead that's still to reach the midway point .

With course form figures reading 26-MC-MC-MC-27-MC, the pre-event 12/113.00 shot, Matt Fitzpatrick, didn't look like a great price before the off but after two bogey-free rounds of 65 and 64, he heads into the weekend with a one-stroke lead over my pre-event fancy, Jeff Winther.

Last year's edition, won by this year's first round leader, Michael Kim, was staged at Golf de Saint-Nom-La-Bretèche while Le Golf National was being renovated and for the record, Kim sat ninth, trailing by five at this stage, but here's a list of the last 10 course winners (including the Olympics in 2024), detailing where they sat at the midway point.

As many as three of the last eight course winners were tied at the top at halfway but we've seen winners come from absolutely miles back in the last decade, so the stats aren't especially helpful, and clear 36-hole leaders have a poor record.

Marcel Siem, who's back in-the-mix again this year, is the only clear halfway leader to win here since John Bickerton 20 years ago.

Siem led by a stroke at this stage before taking the title 12 years ago, so this is a tough place to make the running, and Fitzpatrick makes no appeal at all at less than 6/42.50.

The world number four is clearly the man to beat but since getting off the mark on the DP World Tour at the Nordea Masters a decade ago, after he'd led by three at halfway, he's held a clear advantage in a 72-hole stroke play event seven times and he's only converted once, at The Heritage at Harbour Town in April, where he beat Scottie Scheffler in a playoff after he'd led by three at the midway stage.

It's quite tempting to lay the leader but that tactic backfired badly a few weeks ago when I took on Shane Lowry in-running and I'm not going to be around tomorrow to trade in-running so instead of laying the leader, I've just had a very small wager on the recent Omega European Masters winner, Thriston Lawrence.

Trailing by four, the South African looks a fair price at 42.041/1.
