Farmers Insurance Open 2022: Course and current form stats

A second straight week in California, as the PGA Tour travels 135 miles south-west to arrive at one of America's most famous public venues - Torrey Pines.

The Farmers Insurance Open will, as ever, be held over two courses.

The South Course - which also staged last year's US Open - remains tournament host, with the North Course involved during the first couple of days.

As is tradition with this event, the golfers will play one round on each course over the first 36 holes, before the South takes charge for days three and four. This week's tournament will start on Wednesday, and end Saturday.

Course Characteristics

Torrey Pines, situated around 16 miles north of downtown San Diego, is one of golf's most iconic locations.

It's certainly a venue that requires golfers to battle and survive the often severe weather conditions, that usually blow in from the Pacific.

Both South and North courses have undergone major renovations in recent years.

In order to prepare the course for the 2021 US Open, the South was lengthened by Rees Jones and measured 7,685 yards when Jon Rahm secured his maiden major title last June.

A number of greens were relocated closer to hazards, such as canyons, while every putting surface was re-contoured to provide multiple pin placements.

The South's undulating greens are smaller than their counterparts on the North Course which was upgraded by Tom Weiskopf six years ago.

Weiskopf increased the size of the greens by approximately 20-30%, and they now measure around 6,400 square feet.

Although both courses are par 72s, the South is considerably tougher and usually averages around two strokes per round higher. Water is not an issue on either layout.

Torrey Pines made its PGA Tour debut in 1968.

Low Percentages For Driving Accuracy

The Farmers Insurance Open is an event where the Driving Accuracy percentages are generally low.

In fact, of the 29 venues which qualified for a ranking in the table below, none had an overall tournament percentage (52.43%) as low as Torrey Pines.

However, this did not prevent the players from collectively hitting as many as 66.76% of Greens in Regulation, which is just over 1% below the PGA Tour average (67.79%) for the same six-year period (2016-21).

With little in the way of dense vegetation waiting to snare a slightly offline drive, the South Course at Torrey Pines is generally a haven for the longer hitters.

Four To Watch

Tony Finau: Always a strong each-way bet in this tournament.

Jon Rahm: The current world No 1 is an obvious choice, given that he won last year's US Open here, as well as being a former champion in the Farmers Insurance Open.

Xander Schauffele: The local kid has finally come to terms with Torrey Pines after missing the cut four times in his first five starts. Was a joint runner-up last year, and tied-7th a few months later at the US Open.

Will Zalatoris: The big-hitting 25-year-old should have the perfect game to perform well over the South Course. He tied-seventh 12 months ago.
