Find Me a 100 Winner: Hidalgo might just take to the Belfry

Angel Hidalgo in action in Sweden three weeks ago

We've got the British Masters and the Rocket Mortgage Classic to look forward to this week and our man's got two outsiders to trade in each event...

I thought for a while on Friday that we might follow the US Open win with Wyndham Clark with another winner last week when 110.0109/1 chance, Denny McCarthy, posted a -15 halfway total at Travelers Championship.

He was matched on Friday at just 2.942/1, so he comfortably met the first lay back target, but Keegan Bradley finished his second round nicely to draw alongside McCarthy and my man was largely disappointing after that, eventually finishing tied for seventh behind Bradley.

Pan worth chancing again

I like all three of Dave Tindall's picks this week, but I can't bring myself to pull the trigger on Brandon Wu at less than 100.099/1.

He was a pick for the column last week at 360.0359/1 when missing the cut so it's a bit bizarre to see him so short given another of last week's picks, C.T Pan, who also missed the cut, is trading at virtually the same price. He was backed at 210.0209/1 last week and he's trading at 200.0199/1 at the time of writing.

Admittedly, having finished fourth and third in his two previous outings, last week's weekend off was a bigger fall from grace but given he has form at another Donald Ross track (he was second in the Wyndham Championship in 2018), I thought he was worth chancing again at 200.0199/1 around the Ross-designed Detroit Golf Club.

He's missed the cut on the two previous occasions he's played here previously but he has two top-12s at another venue that appears to correlate - the Country Club of Jackson - which is home to the Sanderson Farm Championship, and he's a very good putter on his day.

Higgo can get hot in Detroit

South Africa's Garrick Higgo is an in-and-out performer, but he knows how to win.

He won three times in eight months on the DP World Tour before winning the Palmetto Championship on the PGA Tour two years ago on his very first appearance.

He's not done much of late but his best performance to date this season was his third place finish at the Sanderson Farms so I was happy to chance him at a juicy price too.

Hidalgo might just take to the Belfry

Spain's Angel Hidalgo is playing at the Belfry for the first time this week, but he may just take to the place given his penchant for a tree-lined track.

The 25-year-old was tied for the lead at the halfway stage of the Andalucía Masters in October last year, after he shot a course record equalling 63 around Valderrama (finished fourth), he's played well at Galgorm Castle (13th at the ISPS Handa World Invitational last year), and he was 15th at the Soudal Open last month. And he played nicely in the Scandinavian Mixed last time out, where he finished 12th.

Morrison chanced at a massive price

A year before Hidalgo finished fourth at Valderrama, England's James Morrison finished fourth there and he already has a reasonable bank of form at the Belfry, reading 39-21-27.

The Englishman is very inconsistent, but he can spark into life out of the blue and as recently as last month he finished seventh at the Soudal Open - an event played at another tree-lined venue.
