Cook: I think Harry Brook has the potential to go past Kevin Pietersen

When Harry Brook dominates a series or does something like KP did in one of the big series, I think all around Harry has the potential to go past KP. But when KP sits down and watches, he can say that on some of those absolute biggest moments - clearly 2005 - he delivered. Unbelievable.

Vaughan: Brook can have a moment where England win an Ashes series

I have no doubt Harry Brook, and the England side will have a moment where they win an Ashes series and he is Man of the Series. I believe he'll win England a white-ball trophy. KP won England a T20 World Cup with his game. And I think Harry Brook has got it in him to win plenty.

Gough: You can't have players who aren't as talented as Brook trying to do what he does

Harry Brook is a one-off. I love watching Harry play, and I think he's taken batting to another level. But you can't have players who aren't as talented as Harry Brook trying to do what he does. That was the biggest mistake for me from watching this team.

You've got someone like Ben Duckett, who's a brilliant cricketer, but he's trying to do something like he thinks it's a medal for not leaving a ball. When good bowlers are bowling at you, putting the ball in the same area consistently, you're going to nick off."

Gough: I spotted Harry's potential early

When I was working at Yorkshire, we had Brook and Joe Root batting together at Gloucester. Rooty came and sat down after he got out for about 80. Harry got 150 in no time. Joe said, 'I'm glad I got out. He's making me look very average.' That's from Joe Root!

His talent is off the scale. I remember first seeing him having throwdowns. I went straight to the Chairman and CEO's office, ripped his contract up, and said, 'You've got to give him a new contract. It's ridiculous.

Vaughan: I now feel very relaxed that England's Test team has got an absolute rock-solid coach

We've got Stephen Fleming, who I thought was excellent in terms of the way he spoke this week. I actually listened and thought, 'Finally, we've got a bit of sense.' There's a bit of sense; there's a bit of maturity.

He even used the word 'damning' talking about that fourth day at Trent Bridge with Ben Stokes. He said it wasn't a great look for cricket, never mind for English cricket; it was just a bad look for the game. So, I now feel very relaxed that England's Test team has got an absolute rock-solid coach in charge.

Lloyd: The England Test team are moving forward now under Joe Root

I think the telling thing was Root, as captain of the red-ball Test team, coming out and saying, 'Behave yourselves. I'm hacked off,' which was a bit strong for him. I think that's been the fundamental thing which has put it all to bed. You're in the past now, aren't you? Move forward.

Vaughan: Winning an Ashes series is your legacy

Winning an Ashes series is your legacy, not just for a captain and a coach, but for a chairman and a CEO.

Bringing the money in is great, but at the end of it, if you've not won an Ashes series, you haven't won a World Cup, and you haven't reached a World Test Championship final, but you've got a few quid in the bank, people will say, 'Well, you didn't look after the cricket.'

For the Ashes series, where do you want to play to beat Australia? You have to have two in London, and the other three venues should be based on where we can win. 

Cook and Gough on Jonathan Trott

Cook: I think he'll do a really good job. He's measured and sensible. Anyone who can coach Afghanistan and do a decent job there, with everything going on off the field, has good experience and a good cricket brain. He'll be good again, I think.

Gough: I like Trotty, I think he's a safe pair of hands. To go and do Afghanistan and get them to a semi-final, I think he did a terrific job. I do think his ambition is to coach England, but he could easily be tempted by more franchise work. IPL would have been the golden ticket.

Cook: The ECB believed McCullum reinvented how we manage players

Those first 10 games under McCullum, people believed, and the leadership of the ECB believed, that they'd reinvented how we manage players.

And I'm kind of glad that Test cricket has stood the test of time, so there are some fundamentals, no matter how good you are, that stays true. Fundamentally, the test of cricket has stood the test of time where you can't just have a Nighthawk.

Gough: Test cricket makes you doubt your own ability

Test cricket eats you up. When you go through a little bad patch, you start questioning certain parts of it. So, when you come in and you do well, you think, 'Yeah, I'll carry on doing that.'

But then you have a couple of bad games, or get a couple of low scores, and you think, 'Am I doing something wrong?' It gradually over time eats you up. That's why it's so hard; you start doubting your own ability.
