Shootout comes to Betfair!
There are a few sporting moments more dramatic than a penalty shootout.
From the bad times of Chris Waddle and Stuart Pearce in 1990 to Eric Dier finally getting the Three Lions over the line in 2018, England fans barely need reminding of that!
World Cups regularly deliver shootouts - we have seen 35 since they were introduced for the 1982 tournament and five of the 16 knockout games in 2022 went to spot-kicks, so it's with great excitement that we launch Shootout!
For the knockout rounds of the 2026 World Cup, Betfair customers can bet on each penalty in every shootout. Will a goal be scored or saved? You can now have a wager on that.
But we've also taken it a level up with the option to back one of six shot locations, too.
The most dramatic moment in sport has got a little bit more dramatic with Betfair's Shootout.
And with 32 games in the knockout stages of the 2026 World Cup there will be plenty of opportunities to give it a try.
Shootout FAQs
What is it?
When a game goes to penalties, Betfair customers can bet on where a penalty taker will score or miss!
When can I use it?
In penalty shootouts only, not when a penalty is awarded within 90 minute game or in extra-time. The game needs to go the distance to a penalty shootout for Shootout to become available.
When is it available?
Available after the 110th minute in extra time if the teams are tied.
Can I only bet on players to score?
No, you can bet on players to miss as well. Shootout players can toggle between "To Score" and "To Miss" options before selecting direction of the penalty. So, for example if customers think that a penalty will be saved in the bottom left corner, they will firstly toggle the "To Miss" option before choosing the bottom left square in the goal grid.
Where will it appear on site?
In a 'Penalties' tab on the event page.
How are bets settled?
Shot location determined by Opta. If your selection matches the Opta location, then you win!
If someone bets on a penalty taker who doesn't end up taking a penalty, is the bet void?
Correct! If a player does not take the penalty, the bet will be void.
If the player hits the post near my selection, does it count as a win?
No, penalties that hit the woodwork settle as missed penalties.
