We have launched new Goal Lines markets that allow you to bet on the number of goals in a match with both whole and quarter lines - here's more information...
Goal Lines are a form of football betting, similar to our current Over/Under markets. The added benefit of Goal Lines is that there are an increased number of betting opportunities, which give traders and bettors more flexibility and freedom on any given event.
In addition to the traditional half goal lines (0.5, 1.5 etc.), we also have whole goals (1.0, 2.0 etc.) and quarter goals (0.5 & 1.0, 2.0 & 2.5 etc.).
In the case of a half goal line, there are two outcomes - you either win or you lose. For example:
A £10 back bet on Over 1.5 @ 1.88:
- 0 or 1 goals scored: £10 loss
- 2+ goals scored: £8.80 profit
Whole goal lines have three possible outcomes, as the bet is void or pushed in the scenario where the number of goals scored is equal to the line you have bet on. See the below examples:
A £10 back bet on Under 2.0 @ 3.6:
- 1 Goal scored: £26 profit
- 2 Goals scored: Void and stake returned
- 3 Goals scored: £10 loss
A £10 back bet on Over 3.0 @ 4.1:
- 2 Goals scored: £10 loss
- 3 Goals scored: Void and stake returned
- 4 Goals scored: £31 profit
Quarter ball lines are in essence a combination of a whole and a half ball line (e.g 2.5 & 3.0), and the stake is split evenly between a bet on the whole line and a bet on the half line. For example, if you bet £20 on Over 2.5 & 3.0, then you have two separate £10 bets (at the same odds) on Over 2.5 and Over 3.0. See the following examples for some settlement examples:
A £10 back bet on Under 1.0 & 1.5 @ 2.42:
- 0 Goals scored: £14.20 profit
- 1 Goals scored: £7.10 profit (Under 1.0 is void, and Under 1.5 is won - so you half win)
- 2 Goals scored: £10 loss
A £10 back bet on Over 2.0 & 2.5 @ 3.14:
- 1 Goal scored: £10 loss
- 2 Goals scored: £5 loss (Over 2.0 is void, and Over 2.5 has lost - so you half lose)
- 3 Goals scored: £21.40 profit
As you can see from the above examples, there are far more opportunities when betting on Goal Lines than there have been traditionally on Betfair, so we are confident this will be an excellent addition to our product suite.
Goal Lines will be available on Mobile before they are available on Desktop, so we encourage customers to ensure that any market management is completed on mobile.
Given the complexities around settlement on these markets, the P&L display in the market view will only take into account the win and lose outcomes on those lines. The betslip, however, will give customers a more detailed breakdown into all possible outcomes for a given bet, including the void and half win/lose possibilities. In the below example, the best case scenario is a £2 profit, and the worst case a £2 loss - but there is also the possibility of a £1 profit in the case there is a single goal scored. This is not reflected in the displayed P&L.
A £2 back bet on Under 1.0 & 1.5 @ 2.0:
- 0 goals scored: £2 profit
- 1 goal scored: £1 profit
- 2+ goals scored: £2 loss
We understand the desire to understand the global position on Goal Lines markets and we will be looking to release a P&L table similar to the one for the Asian Handicap market. This will ensure customers can see their entire P&L for a given event across all active goal lines.
Like Over/Under markets, these markets will settle in-play as goals are scored ensuring that exposure is reduced as the game progresses and that funds are returned to customers. In addition, commission will be charged on total winnings on each line:
Market 1 - £50 profit on the Over/Under 1.0 & 1.5 line
at 5% commission
= £2.50 commission paid
Market 2 - £18 profit on the Over/Under 1.5 line
at 5% commission
= £0.90 commission paid
= total of £3.40 commission paid
For a more detailed breakdown on settlement by line for each number of goals scored, please see the below table:
When are these markets settled?
Each set of lines, for example Under 0.5 and Over 0.5, will be settled when the determining goal is scored, in this case it would be on the first goal being scored.
How much commission do I pay on these markets?
Commission is paid on each set of lines at your commission rate. See the examples above for a clear breakdown.
In there a P&L table?
We do not have a P&L table currently but P&L will be displayed inline like on the current Over/Under markets.
How do I access these markets?
You can access these markets by clicking the all markets tab on the event page on mobile, and then clicking Goal Lines. On desktop, you will see Goal Lines in the left-hand menu once you enter an event.
Is Cash Out available on these markets?
In the short term, Cash Out will not be available on these markets, but it is an improvement we are looking to add in the near future.
