Dwan on High Stakes Poker
When Tom "durrrr" Dwan announced that he would play anyone, except his good friend Phil "OMGCLAYAIKEN" Galfond at heads-up Pot-limit Omaha or No-limit Hold'em and beat them, offering them three-to-one odds on doing so, the online poker world was tingling with anticipation.
That was over a year ago and still Dwan and his first challenger, Patrik Antonius, still have not managed to play their allocated 50,000 hands. Maybe it is a tactic by Antonius never to log onto his account again as he currently finds himself in a $2,000,000 hole with only 10,500 hands to turn it around otherwise he has to give Dwan $500,000! Whatever the excuses are it appears Dwan has become bored of waiting for The Flying Finn to continue with the challenge and this week started another one, this time playing $200/$400 no-limit Hold;'em with Dan "jungleman12" Cates.
Dwan's latest opponent is an exciting individual who is completely fearless at the poker tables. Just two years ago he was playing $0.25/$0.50 heads-up cash games and he can now be found taking on anybody for the highest stakes available.
On Friday Dwan and Cates took to the virtual felt and played six tables against each other. After the first session came to an end Dwan confidently tweeted from his Twitter account, "finished 1st session w/jungleman. +129885.5 after 1,651 hands" though he failed to make any further tweets when the duo met again later than day and "jungleman12" took him for over $518,000 in total!
Both players stayed away from the virtual felt over the weekend but they clashed again on Monday with Cates once again walking away in much better shape than "durrrr." After a session measuring 958 hands, Dan "jungleman12" Cates found he had made a further $172,954 profit meaning he is up almost $700,000 in the Durrrr Challenge 2 after a shade under 6,500 of 50,000 hands.
One of the rules of the challenge is each player must rebuy to at least 100 big blinds if and when their stack drops below 75 big blinds. This rule has caused some controversy and rumours on various poker fourms as Dwan failed to reload a number of times and when he did it was for strange amounts, leading to many people to believe he is close to busting his online roll. However, Dwan is unlikely to keep his reported several million dollar bankroll online at once so expect proper service to resume when the two next lock horns.
