Last week she was holding her own at No-limit Hold'em against some of the biggest names in poker in Las Vegas this week she reaching the final table of the $1,100AUD Pot-limit Omaha event at the Aussie Millions. Is there any end to Annette Obrestad's talents?
In total 160 players paid the $1,100AUD entry fee, 40 more than the previous year, but you would be forgiven for thinking this was a $11 tournament if you saw one of the hands that unfolded on Annette's table. Two players ended up all-in on a board reading Ks8d5s3d and the river came out Js. Player one showed KsQsQdJh for two pair but player two was adamant he had a straight holding 6j7c7d4d but was informed you need to use two and only two cards from your starting hand in Omaha, much to the amusement of Miss Obrestad!
Things did not really start well for Annette and she found herself down to just 2,000 chips when she flopped top two pair only to have her opponent hit a runner-runner flush on her but the very next hand she quadrupled up to 8,000 and never looked back.
Before the break she moved up to 22,000 chips when she ended up all-in on the turn after flopping an eight-high straight (the nuts at the time) and a nut-flush draw, which held against her opponent's set of jacks. Then right after the restart from lunch she increased her stack to 36,500 thanks to her two-pair being too much for her opponent, Con Angelakis.
This stack would see her safely through the bubble, which was burst when Jason Bandouvakis raised first in from the small blind, Oliver Gill re-potted blindly and was called. Acting without looking at your cards must be the new way to play as Gill turned quad aces to eliminate his opponent, meaning everyone who still had chips remaining would be guaranteed $2,000AUD.
In the space of half an hour there were six eliminations, one of which being WSOP bracelet winner, Irishman Marty Smith, who lost all his chips when he ran his pocket kings in Annette's pocket aces and when Oliver Gill busted Jason Pritchard shortly afterwards the final table was set.
Annette Obrestad goes into the final table third in chips with a healthy 157,000 stack, very close to second place man Con Angelakis with 165,000 but trailing Oliver Gill's 246,000 by quite some way. Play gets restarts at 1500 GMT with the table playing until just one man, or woman, is left standing and they will take a coveted gold championship ring and $40,000AUD.
