Black Caviar, currently rated the second best horse in the World behind Frankel, with a Timeform rating of 135, is set to make her 2012 reappearance next Friday when she goes for the Group 2 Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley and pleased trainer Peter Moody with a work-out preparation (see video below) at Caulfield on Tuesday under regular partner Luke Nolen.
Black Caviar will be stepping up to seven furlongs (1400m) for the first time in her career as she attempts to extend her unbeaten run to 17 straight victories, a sequence that has so far included seven Grade 1s.
Moody stated that the world-famous mare will have a light workout next week, three days before the race itself on Friday, and that her preparation had gone extremely well so far, despite the mare putting on a fair bit of condition during her three weeks in the paddocks.
Moody wants to ensure Black Caviar is accustomed to running seven furlongs on flat Australian tracks before she comes over to Britain, where she will be asked to race on testing six furlong courses.
Black Caviar is likely to remain racing over seven furlongs for the time being in Australia, with the Grade 1 CF Orr Stakes and the Grade 1 Futurity Stakes, both at Caulfield next month, likely to be on her agenda, although her trainer did suggest a step up in trip to a mile could also be in the offing after the Futurity Stakes.
Black Caviar is then likely to head to Britain for a summer campaign that may include the Group 1 Golden Jubilee at Royal Ascot and the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket. Black Caviar is likely to be Timeform top-rated for both of those races if making the trip over and it will be fascinating to see how she compares to the current crop of British sprinters.
