"Victory for Westmead Osprey in the Betfair Arc would go some way to easing the pain suffered by Nick Savva and his team last week after the loss to bone cancer of leading dam Mega Delight."
Master trainer lost top dam Mega Delight this week, so victory for Betfair Arc favourite Westmead Osprey would bring welcome change of fortune
Westmead Osprey is a red-hot favourite for the Betfair Arc after another faultless performance in Saturday's second round.
Nick Savva's dog was the quickest winner on the night and is now down to [2.0] for Swindon glory ahead of Friday's semi-finals.
In the second semi-final on Friday, Westmead Osprey takes on fellow second-round scorer Gilbeyhall Jake, while Oaks champion Shaws Dilemma is the eye-catcher in the first semi.
The first three in each line-up for the final, which features as part of a Betfair-backed extravaganza at Swindon on Tuesday night.
Friday's semi-finals:-
First semi: 1 Farloe Titan 2 Little Jig 3 Shaws Dilemma 4 Grillagh Guru (m) 5 Sparklee Bernie (m) 6 Klockwork Kyla (w)
Second semi: 1 Westmead Osprey 2 Toems Champ 3 Birchfield Hero 4 Gilbeyhall Jake 5 Lifes Burble (m) 6 Nats Jedi (w)
Victory for Westmead Osprey would go some way to easing the pain suffered by Nick Savva and his team last week after the loss to bone cancer of leading dam Mega Delight.
The most prolific and successful brood bitch of recent years, Mega Delight's life was cut short at the relatively young age of 10 having looked to have recovered from a recent setback.
However, when bone cancer was diagnosed, there was no option but to put her down to save further suffering, and thus end an incredible career, both on the track and in the paddocks.
Owned by Bob Morton, Mega Delight made an inauspicious start to her career on the track in the UK, but a switch to Seamus Graham's kennels in Ireland proved her making.
She dominated the staying scene in Ireland, at one stage completing an unbeaten sequence of 15 straight successes including in one of Ireland's most prestigious staying races, the Corn Cuchulainn.
When her track career was curtailed, she went to the paddocks with Nick Savva, and so began a dynasty when she threw the likes of the Westmeads Aoifa, Joe, Swift, Olivia, Liz, Keawn, Tina, Prince, Grant, Max, Ace and Tommy.
But she will always be remembered as being the dam of three successive English Derby winners after her Westmead Lord (2007) succeeded the great Westmead Hawk (2005-6).
Pelaw Grange has hit the big time.
The Durham venue kick-starts its biggest event in its short GBGB history tonight (Tuesday) with the £5,000 to the winner Joe Hardy Memorial Gold Cup.
A cracking field has assembled including the likes of Droopys Bocelli, Blood Of Kings and Target Brett. However, Centaur Allstar, the Scurry winner, is a late withdrawal.
Crayford are building up towards the Golden Jacket.
Won last year by Betfair Prestige winner Lorrys Options, the event this years kicks off on a Friday after the Kent venue changed its racenights from Monday to Friday.
The heats take place on Friday, February 12, with the semi-finals on February 20 and the final on February 27. Both the semis and final will be on Saturday morning's BAGS service, live into the country's betting shops.
Among the favourites will be the defending champion, who will look to build on his Betfair-backed success at Hall Green.
Dust down the dinner jacket, it's awards time once again.
The 2010 GBGB Awards take place at the London Hilton Metropole this Sunday (January 31) where most eyes will be on the winner of the Greyhound of the Year for 2009.
Among those in line for the sport's top honour are Fear Zafonic, Eye Onthe Storm, Platinumlancelot, Kinda Ready and Midway Skipper.
