The Grade 3 Delta Downs Jackpot December 7, 2007
The $1-million Delta Downs Jackpot is the third-richest race for 2-year-olds behind the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and Juvenile Fillies. This track's signature race is contested at a distance of 1 1/16 miles (8.5f) on dirt.
One of the most famous editions was the 2007 running when Z Humor and Turf War dead-heated for the win in Louisiana's richest race. Z Humor, under Garrett Gomez and trained by Bill Mott, raced just off the early pace in the mile and a sixteenth Jackpot. Turf War, meanwhile, was trailing at that point, more than a dozen lengths back under Calvin Borel. Z Humor took the lead at the top of the stretch and Turf War came into the stretch about eight-wide closing fast and furiously. The photo finish could not separate them.

How to find winners at Delta Downs...
The Delta Downs main track favors a small community of jockeys and trainers that thrive over the surface. Jockey Diego Saenz excels with speed-types in sprint races winning close to 30% of the time. The same can be said for jockey Roberto Morales.
Trainer Eduardo Ramirez is solid with horses coming off long layoffs and with second off the Claim runners.
In sprint races the win percentage is diverse from all draw positions, allowing for an even playing field. Post 5 and 8 have been ineffective going distance races and were a combined 0/44 to start the fall 2016 season.
The Delta Downs dirt surface is speed favouring and especially so in sprint races. The horses that are on or close to the lead in 5f sprints win over 40% of the time. If your selection is drawn outside and has a good turn of early foot (whether it's in a sprint or route) it's usually a winning combination.

Speed-types - Samuel Breaux or Eduardo Ramirez-trained starters ridden by jockey Diego Saenz are a deadly combination. Trainer Karl Broberg clicks at a steady 35% the past five years at this racetrack with horses coming off a first or second off the Claim.
