The right-handed player reached the final of Wimbledon in 2010 but was beaten by Rafael Nadal. He has also been as high as number five in the world rankings.

Berdych first started playing tennis at the age of five in a tennis centre in his hometown. He had a very successful junior career in the Czech Republic, winning the country's under-12 competition along with other tournaments.

In 2002, Berdych turned professional and immediately had some success, winning two Futures events early in his career, beating Pavel Snobel and Ladislav Charamosta respectively in the two finals.

The Czech player won his first ATP Tour match in the 2003 US Open when he defeated Tomas Behrand 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the Grand Slam. He was then beaten in four sets by Juan Ignacio Chela in his next game.

In 2004 he won his opening ATP title in Palermo. He was able to get past David Ferrer in the semi-final and then Filippo Volandri 6-3, 6-3 in the final.
Berdych's biggest win of his career came in the 2005 Paris Masters. Wins over Jiri Novak, Guillermo Coria, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Gaston Gaudio, Radek Stepanek and Ivan Ljubicic came along the way to the victory in the ATP 1000 event.

Since then he has twice gone close to winning another Masters Series tournament. He reached the final of the Miami Masters in 2010 and then in the Madrid Open in 2012, losing to Andy Roddick and Roger Federer respectively.

The former Paris Masters winner reached his first Grand Slam final in 2010 at Wimbledon. In the quarter-final he defeated seven-time winner Federer. A victory over Novak Djokovic arrived in the semi-final, but he did have to settle for the runner-up spot after a straight sets defeat to Nadal in the final.

In 2013 Berdych was involved in the longest ATP doubles match in history when representing his country in the Davis Cup. Along with his partner Lukas Rosol, they defeated Switzerland's Marco Chiudinelli and Stanislas Wawrinka in a match that lasted seven hours and two minutes. The final score finished 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7, 24-22 in favour of the Czech team. It was the second longest ATP match ever in both singles and doubles.
