Juan Martin del Potro

Born on 23rd September 1988 in Tandil, Argentina, Juan Martin del Potro has since grown to a height of six-foot-six. Having started playing tennis at the age of seven, Del Potro won his first senior match in 2004, aged 15, before turning professional in 2006.

After taking tentative steps in his early career, del Potro came to prominence in 2008 when he became the first ever player to win his first four career titles in as many tournaments. It was also the second longest winning streak by a teenager in the Open Era. He also managed to make it to his first Grand Slam quarter-final at the US Open, but lost to Andy Murray in four sets. His good form saw the Argentine qualify for the World Tour Finals, but he failed to qualify from his group, and ended 2008 as world number 9.

Del Potro started 2009 in the same vein as 2008, reaching the quarter-finals of the Australian and the semi-finals of the French Open, losing both times to Roger Federer. At the US Open at the end of the year, Del Potro claimed his maiden Grand Slam title after beating Rafael Nadal in the semi-final and Federer in the final.

The 2010 season started with the player ranked number four in the world, but an injured wrist saw him miss nine months of the tennis season.

Following his second round defeat at the 2011 Australian Open he saw himself fall to 485 in the rankings. He didn't stay there too long, as he reached the last 16 of Wimbledon for the first time and the third round of the US Open, as well as winning two ranking tournaments, highlighting the fact that he was nearing a return.

His performance in 2012 indicated that he had conquered his wrist injury. He reached the quarter-finals of three of the Grand Slam tournaments, but was knocked out in the fourth round of Wimbledon. He also won four ranking tournaments.

2013 saw his best ever Wimbledon performance as he made it to the semi-finals, but he was knocked out in the third round of the Australian Open and second round of the US Open. He did, however, win five ranking titles.

Del Potro is revered in the tennis world. The manner in which he has battled back from a career threatening injury is a real testament to his character. In total he has won 16 ATP titles, one Grand Slam and a Bronze Olympic medal.
