David Ferrer was born on 2nd April 1982 in Xàbia in the province of Alicante, Spain. During his childhood Ferrer was forced to move around Spain to follow his dream of becoming a professional tennis player. In his formative years, Ferrer moved to Gandia, then to Barcelona where he attended the Catalans Tennis Federation before spending time at Juan Carlos Ferrero's Academy in Villena. It was clear from a young age that Ferrer had a talent for tennis and that he was willing to make sacrifices in order to become a success but, after nine months at Ferrero's academy, the Spanish federation opted to fund Ferrer's rival Tommy Robredo instead and he returned home. Forced to fund his own development, Ferrer linked up with coach Javier Piles back in Xàbia, and eventually turned professional in 2000. The two continue to work together today.

A year after turning professional Ferrer won his first Challenger tour title in Sopot before winning his first ATP title in Bucharest in 2002. In 2003 Ferrer made his debut at all four Grand Slams and over the course of the next few years his standing within the sport continued to grow. By the end of 2005 Ferrer was ranked number 14 in the world and would break into the top 10 in 2006.
Ferrer's biggest win on tour to date came at the Paris Masters in 2012 when he defeated Jerzy Janowicz in the final. Ferrer is still searching for Grand Slam success but he did reach the final of the 2013 French Open, where he was defeated by Rafael Nadal, and has previously reached the semi-finals of the US and Australian Opens. Arguably Ferrer's biggest achievement in tennis has been to be part of Spain's victorious Davis Cup teams of 2008, 2009 and 2011 as well as being part of the team that was defeated in the 2012 final.
Since turning professional David Ferrer has always had a reputation as a formidable player on clay and his consistency, fitness and hard work have served him well. Ferrer is patient and is willing to continue long rallies from the baseline, forcing his opponent around the court with his accurate groundstrokes. In July 2013 Ferrer rose to his highest ever world ranking of 3 and he currently sits 10th in the list of all time money earners on tour.
