Memphis Tennessee is a racehorse trained by Ballyboyle trainer Aidan O'Brien in Ireland. He is the son of Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe winner Hurricane Run and Hit The Sky.
The bay horse is owned by Mrs John Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith. His breeder was Kilfrush Stud in Ireland.
O'Brien's horse made his debut as a two-year old at Cork but could only finish fifth on his opening racecourse appearance. He was ridden on that occasion by Johnny Murtagh, who was the stable jockey at the time.
Later that year he did get off the mark in a maiden at Dundalk on their all-weather track. He went off as the 11/10 favourite in a mile contest and was able to score by just over a length under Joseph O'Brien. He was given a patient ride and took the lead inside the final furlong after which he kept on well.
At the start of his three-year old campaign, he was entered in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial. The Group Two has been used by a lot of Derby contenders from Ireland in recent years. Despite going off at 25/1 in the betting, Memphis Tennessee was not far behind the winner Recital in second place.
Instead of a trip to Epsom for the Derby, O'Brien chose to keep him in Ireland for the Irish Derby later in June. He was able to get into the frame for the Classic behind stablemates Treasure Beach and Seville.
Memphis Tennessee remained in training at the age of four. He started his campaign off by winning the Group Three Ormonde Stakes at Chester during their May Meeting. He appreciated the step up to 1m5f as he drew clear from his rivals, justifying his Evens starting price.
During Royal Ascot of 2012 he took his chance in the Group Two Hardwicke Stakes but finished last of the 12 runners as he weakened over the final three furlongs of the 1m4f race during the royal meeting.
In 2013, the Irish horse returned to Chester for the May Meeting once again for his defence of the Ormonde Stakes. He was unable to win the contest for the second consecutive year as he was no match for the winner Mount Athose, while Mad Moose and Communicator also finished ahead of him. He had to be ridden by O'Brien four furlongs from home.
