Today's Horse Racing Tips: The handicapper may not have done enough to stop Mustarrid

William Buick and Mustarrid will be doing their best work late

"He was helped at Nottingham by the strong pace and I think he will get a true run race again here as the likes of Street Poet and DawaaLeeb don't normally hang about."

Back Mustarrid @ 9/4 in the 16:00 Newcastle

Alan Thompson has two more selections today, one on the all weather at Newcastle and the other from Fontwell...

Mustarrid will be running on at the finish

Back Mustarrid @ 11/4 in the 16:00 Newcastle

Ian Williams' runner Mustarrid was heavily backed when running out a six length winner on heavy ground at Nottingham latest. Prior to that event he had been running in much better quality races and was dropped into that Class 4 event where he won by an easy six lengths. He carries a 5lb penalty for that success but seems to be in the form of his life. He was helped at Nottingham by the strong pace and I think he will get a truly run race again here as the likes of Street Poet and DawaaLeeb don't normally hang about.

He has already won on the all-weather at Chelmsford and Wolverhampton and this straight mile at Newcastle will also be a proper test of stamina, but I can see him coming from off the pace and rattling home under William Buick.

Honeyball team can continue good form at Fontwell

Back Gustavian @ 15/8 in the 15:10 Fontwell

The Anthony Honeyball yard can do no wrong at present, seven wins from his last 15 runners, and they can add to that impressive haul here with Gustavian. He has been off the course for 237 days but the lightly raced five-year-old's novice campaign was full of promise and he should do better now that he kicks off in handicaps from a reasonable looking mark.

His most recent assignment was a strong run given the task he faced that day trying to give 6lbs to one who was then given a mark of 128 on their handicap debut. He shouldn't be up against that sort of opposition today. This is a consistent performer who hasn't been outside the front two on his first four career starts, he also gets the hood on for the first time today.

The favourite is College Oak for the Jamie Snowden team, he won off this mark on Saturday at Ascot so is an obvious threat, providing this isn't too quick a turnaround for him. He hasn't run within 33 days of a previous race before and two of his three wins have been after 191 and 234 day breaks, so its a bit of a concern.

A bigger threat may be Gary Moore's horse Quloob who has the claimer Niall Houlihan taking a very handy 7lbs off his back and he has been showing some useful form on the flat.
