Heia to cope with the hustle of a big field
It's been a fun four days at Punchestown so far but there's still one more day of the marathon festival to go and we get served up another pair of quality Grade 1 contests on the final day.
The Coolmore N.H. Sires Mogul Irish EBF Mares Champion Hurdle at 15:50 features plenty who took in the Cheltenham equivalent last month and that is clearly the key piece of form to concentrate on.
Love Envoi posted a career best there as she chased home the remarkable Honeysuckle and a repeat of that effort will make her very much the one to beat.
With Queens Brook and Echoes In Rain just behind her in third and fourth, Love Envoi appears to be the one who holds all the aces.
However, it's one from further back in that race who catches my eye.
Epatante was clearly below her best in eighth that day, and didn't really settle well enough to do herself justice, while she was also disappointing in open company at Aintree last time.
There's obviously the chance she could just have had enough for the season, but some of her previous efforts - notably when chasing home her top-class stablemate Constitution Hill several times - suggest she still has more than enough ability to compete at this level.
With those rather dull efforts on her last two starts still relatively fresh in the memory, Epatante could be sent off at a value price here and I'm prepared to take a chance that she can bounce back to form.
Lossiemouth the one to beat in other Grade 1
I thought Lossiemouth was sensational in the Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham and I'm no rush to oppose her as she bids to follow up in the Ballymore Champion Four Year Old Hurdle at 17:00.
But for a really bad trip at the Dublin Racing Festival, Willie Mullins' striking grey would be coming into this unbeaten and it's hard to see how the runner-up in the Triumph, Gala Marceau, can reverse the form if Lossiemouth enjoys a trouble-free trip.
A great threat may well be another stablemate, Zarak The Brave, who saw the backside of Lossiemouth at Fairyhouse in December but may well have got closer than the 4 lengths he was beaten if he'd jumped a bit better late on.
That was just his second start and he's been freshened since then, so there's every reason to suspect Zarak The Brave can improve on that showing, though whether he can improve quite enough to bridge the gap is open to debate.
Outside of the Mullins yard, Enjoy The Dream and Nusret are both entitled to prove better than they've shown so far, the former in particular as he makes just his third career start.
Nusret wasn't seen to best effect when runner-up at Aintree last time but it's probably telling that Daryl Jacob appears to have passed hi over in favour of Zarak The Brave.
I'm expecting Lossiemouth to win, though can't recommend her as a bet given the skinny prices involved and am prepared to just take a watching brief.
Mullins mob-handed in hurdle he likes to target
Willie Mullins has a tremendous record in the 2m 3f Fitzwilliam Sport Handicap Hurdle (17:30) and he sets punters a quandary by fielding no less than six of the twenty-one declared runners.
Paul Townend is on Heia and I'm inclined to agree with his choice of mount, as this daughter No Risk At All shaped as if still on a fair mark at Fairyhouse last time before she seemingly failed for stamina over the extended 2m 5f trip.
She'd previously run really well to finish fifth in the Galway Hurdle and her mark of 134 remains unchanged from those last two runs.
I like that she's already shown an ability to handle the hustle and bustle of these big-field handicaps and it would be no surprise at all were she to prove much better than this sort of mark in time.
A strong-travelling type, I expect Heia to move into the race nicely and think she's a cracking each-way bet at the very least.
