Our racing expert has two selections on Friday

Our resident tipster was on the mark with his NAP yesterday and is back today with two selections at Stratford.

  • Looks on a lenient mark

  • Return to quicker ground will suit

  • Sixteen Letters is overpriced at Stratford

Stratford - 19:35 - Back Sixteen Letters

Tonight sees the only handicap hunter chase of the season at Stratford and Caryto Des Brosses heads the market following a good run at Cheltenham but I think one of his rivals is the best handicapped horse in the race if he can show his best.

Sixteen Letters comes here on the back of a defeat at Cothelstone but that was in strange and testing conditions where the grass hadn't been cut and some horses ran well below form.

He's a much better horse on good ground as he showed when chasing home Viroflay in the Coronation Cup earlier in the season at Larkhill. He travelled so well that day that he couldn't help but hit the front too soon and Viroflay came back to beat him.

Sixteen Letters has shown he's capable of running well in hunter chases too when finishing third behind Rebel Dawn Rising on unsuitable ground at Leicester last year and he bolted up at Wincanton on good ground the following month.

He was put up 6lb for that win but was then strangely dropped 3lb after falling at Aintree which means he runs off 110 this evening. The ability he's shown in points suggests that he is better than that rating and the combination of good ground and 2m5f should be an ideal test for him.

There is always the worry that Sixteen Letters needs delivering late as he doesn't do much off the bridle and he could ideally have done with more front runners in this race to set a strong pace but I think he should be much closer to Caryto Des Brosses getting 13lb from that rival. Any 5/2 or bigger appeals.

3/1

Stratford - 20:05 - Back Fortunes Hill

Captain Biggles and Raleagh Flora head the market in this hunter chase and rightly so given their performances this season but there's a rival at a double-figure price who I think could be capable of better than they've shown in their two starts this season.

Fortunes Hill started his career in Ireland wit Robert Tyner and ran a promising race on debut when staying on strongly in the closing stages to finish fourth behind Heros De Moutiers.

He was bought for £60,000 after that to join Jonathan Barlow and he bolted up on his first start for the new yard at Thorpe Lodge despite some terrible jumping in the closing stages.

He was dropped back in trip for his latest start at Charm Park and just looked short of pace when finishing second behind Thomas Labeille.

On both of those starts, Fortunes Hill wore a hood and that's now taken off which could bring improvement from him as he's not looked particularly keen in either race so it could be that it had too much of a calming impact. He's also back up in trip which I think will suit and if he gets back to the level that he showed in Ireland then he could be capable of making an impact.

There is a concern over his jumping as it wasn't great in Ireland and he would have been on the floor under rules if jumping as he did at Thorpe Lodge so that needs to sharpen up. Despite that worry, I still think he's overpriced given his potential for improvement and any 10/1 or bigger appeals.
