Wetherby - 11:57 - Back Klapton Boy
It's a very weak novices hurdle that opens the card at Wetherby today. Serious Chat ran ok on hurdling debut over C&D and he could improve if his jumping sharpens up but he doesn't set a particularly high standard.
Lathan has a penalty for his win in a match against The Geordie Ginge yesterday when they went such a ridiculously slow pace that the time was slower than the following race over three furlongs further.
I'm taking those on with a rules debutant in Klapton Boy who showed some promise on his sole start in an Irish point last season. He was held up and didn't jump too well at times but he got on to the back of a very tightly-packed group of five turning out of the back straight. He was a little awkward around the bend and made a slight mistake at three out but travelled well in behind the leading line of three approaching the final bend. The extremely tight bend coming at that moment didn't help his cause but he quickened through on the inside after jumping two out to put in a challenge before Rubber Ball saw the trip out better than him.
Given the way that he travelled through the race, I think Klapton Boy could be suited by the trip today and physically he looked the type to improve with time too so he may have taken a step forward on that front since his debut.
That was only a fair maiden and it might be that Klapton Boy's full ability will be seen over fences further down the line but I think he's overpriced in such a weak contest for his hurdling debut and any 4/15.00 or bigger appeals.
