Three more outsider picks from Steve after last week's near miss
It was a case of close but no cigar with last week's 120.0119/1 pick, Casey Jarvis, in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
The South African went into the fourth and final round leading by two and trading at 2.3811/8 and he hit a low of 1.51/2 after he'd made back-to-back birdies at four and five, but that was as good as it got.
Having layed some back on Saturday afternoon at 2.26/5 and more at 1.68/13 on Sunday, it was a profitable week, but he played the rest of the round in two-over par to lose by two, so it was a disappointing finish.
On to this week and we've got two events to concentrate on - the Open de Espana on the DP World Tour and the Baycurrent Classic in Japan on the PGA Tour - I've picked one out in Spain and two in Japan.
As highlighted in the Open de Espana preview, the home contingent has a strong record in the event and course form holds up well at Club de Campo, so the 2024 winner, Angel Hidalgo, makes for a very straightforward selection at a big price.
The 26-year-old missed the cut when defending the title last year, as he did in 2024, and his 34th on his course debut in 2022 wasn't a particularly eye-catching performance but he won here wire-to- wire two years ago, beating Jon Rahm in extra time.
That was a very impressive victory and after a decent run of form, he looks a fair price to repeat the feat.
After three missed cuts in-a-row, Hidalgo finished 21st in the British Masters at the end of August, but that was a better performance than it looks like on paper as he sat second with 18 to play.
He followed that with a fourth-place finish in the Omega European Masters and after a 55th in the Irish Open and a missed cut at Wentworth, he bounced back two weeks ago with a strong performance in the Open de France, where consistent rounds of 67, 66, 67 and 67 saw him finish solo second to Matt Fitzpatrick.
My first selection at the Baycurrent Classic, Max Greyserman, is equally straightforward.
The 31-year-old has had a disappointing summer after contending at the US PGA Championship in May.
Weekend rounds of 71 and 70 at Aronimink saw him fall from third to 14th and he finished ninth the following week at the Byron Nelson, but he lost his way after that, finishing outside the top 30 in each of his next nine starts.
He missed the cut last week at the Utah Championship after an underwhelming first round (shot 67 in round two) but he'd played nicely a couple of weeks earlier, finishing 10th in the Biltmore Championship, having led after day one.
Sitting at number 98 in the FedEx Cup standings, Greyserman needs a good week or two to secure a top 100 finish and a place on the PGA Tour next year and he's more likely to do it here than anywhere else.
Having finished second in this event at Narashino Country Club in 2024, Greyserman led at this year's venue, Yokohama Country Club, through the first three rounds last year and he was unlucky not to win.
The winner, Xander Schauffele, who had sat alongside Greyserman with 18 to play, shot a brilliant seven-under-par 64 to win by a stroke.
The front two finished two clear of Michael Thorbjornsen and four clear of the rest and Greyserman, who shot a six-under-par 65, came very close to taking the tournament to extra time.
He clearly enjoys playing in Japan and he's a fair price to play well there again.
As highlighted in the Baycurrent Classic preview, the worst any of the first nine on the final leaderboard ranked for Scrambling 12 months ago was 11th and Christiaan Bezuidenhout, who finished tied for 10th, ranked fourth.
The recent ISCO Championship winner, Steven Fisk, who also finished seventh in Utah last week, is currently ranked fifth for Scrambling on the PGA Tour.
The two-time PGA Tour winner has never played in this event before but his ability to get up-and-down around the greens should be a big asset and he looks a very big price to win his third event in 28 starts at around 100/1101.00.
Dave Tindall makes a solid case for the 29-year-old in his each-way column and I'm happy to chance him at a bigger price in the Betfair Exchange market with a view to trading some back.
As I did last week with Jarvis, I'll be looking to lay some back on any of my selections to secure a profit should they contend over the weekend.
