Ian Poulter

Ian Poulter was born on 10th January 1976 in Hertfordshire, England and he first picked up a golf club at the age of four when his father, who was a good standard local golfer, bought him a cut-down three wood. Throughout his childhood Poulter developed as a golfer alongside his brother Danny, who would also go on to become a professional, and eventually took a job as the assistant professional and club shop manager at Chesfield Downs Golf Club. It was here that he was able to devote more of his time to practice and he took the decision to turn professional in 1996 at the age of 19.

Having joined the Challenger Tour, Poulter eventually won his first title at the 1999 Open de Côte d'Ivoire. Having registered his maiden win it was time for Poulter to progress from the second-tier Challenger Tour to the Main European Tour and he moved up later in 1999 after coming through qualifying school. In 2000, Poulter was named Sir
Henry Cotton rookie of the Year having won the Italian Open in his first season on the European Tour.

Since joining the European Tour Poulter has become one of the biggest stars in world golf, peaking at number 5 in the world rankings in February 2010. Poulter now plays on both the European and the PGA Tours, with his most famous victories to date coming at two World Golf Championship Events: the 2010 Matchplay Championship and the 2012 WGC- HSBC Champions. Poulter is yet to win a Major Championship, although he did finish second behind Pádraig Harrington at the 2008 Open Championship.

Whilst Poulter may be yet to fulfil his potential in individual tournaments, his value in team events is unquestionable. He has played in four Ryder Cup competitions for Europe, winning three of them. His most memorable contribution came in the 2012 event when he was named as a 'captain's pick' by José María Olazábal and won all four of the matches that he played over the three days. On the final day, Poulter defeated Webb Simpson to help Europe on their way to overcoming a four-point deficit and achieving the most unlikely of victories.

Aside from golf, Poulter is well known for his colourful dress sense, in particular his trademark bright trousers, and he launched his own golf fashion label IJP designs in 2007.
