Wyndham Championship FRL Tips from Dave Tindall

After more profits for the column via a full 40/1 each-way payout last week, Dave Tindall has a trio of bets to top the leaderboard come the end of round one at Sedgefield County Club...

Wyndham Championship weather forecast for Thursday

Temperatures have already gone past 70 degrees for the opening groups and the mercury will get close to 100 early in the afternoon.

Wind speeds are light and it's flat calm at the start of play, rising to perhaps 5-6mph in the afternoon.

There's no obvious wave bias.

First Round Leader Bet 1: Ryan Gerard @ 55/156.00

Plenty of players with strong local connections have flourished in this event so let's begin with Ryan Gerard, a native who went to the University of North Carolina.

Along with some excellent recent form - eighth in the Rocket Classic and ninth on his Open debut - the 27-year-old has been making a series of fast starts.

He had a piece of the first-round lead in back-to-back events when starting out with a 64 at May's Charles Schwab Challenge and a 67 in June's Memorial Tournament.

And in those last two outings, he was fourth after round one at Royal Birkdale and second through the first 18 holes at last week's Rocket Classic.

The obvious negative is a pair of missed cuts in his two appearances here but that certainly wasn't down to poor starts. He set out with a 67 in 2023 and a 68 last year.

He tees off at 13:05 local from the 1st.

First Round Leader Bet 2: Mark Hubbard @ 150/1151.00

While Gerard is a healthy 16th in the FedEx Cup rankings, Mark Hubbard is exactly 100 spots lower so needs a big week to make the Playoffs (top 70).

A fast start can facilitate that and he did that here last year when opening with a 63 (also closed with a round of 7-under).

Hubbard was third after the opening lap and third at the finish and he's made five of his last seven Sedgefield cuts.

Widening the lens, the 37-year-old had FRL status at the Texas Open 11 starts ago, was fourth after day one of the Myrtle Beach Classic where he finished runner-up and shot a first-round 66 at the Rocket Classic last week.

With several roads leading his way, Hubbard looks a big price at 150s. He starts from the 10th at 13:27.

First Round Leader Bet 3: Matt McCarty @ 125/1126.00

I want a player with a morning tee-time too and Matt McCarty fits the bill at an attractive 125/1126.00.

The 08:07 starter (1st tee) has very patchy form on the face of it but drill down to round scores and he's having plenty of good individual days.

Even at Royal Birkdale where he missed the cut the left-hander fired a 67 on Friday.

Like the other two picks, there is also a recent first-round lead to be found when going through his results - in fact two of them.

McCarty led the Truist Championship with a 63 and also set the pace at the Charles Schwab Challenge via a 64.

The second selling point is his eighth place finish here on debut last year which included rounds of 64, 65 and 66. It's clearly a course where he can score.
