Baycurrent Classic FRL Tips from Dave Tindall

The PGA Tour heads to Japan and Dave Tindall has a trio of bets to top the leaderboard come the end of round one at Yokohama Country Club...

Baycurrent Classic weather forecast for Thursday

Let's start with tee-times and field size as it shows there's no draw bias.

A total of 78 players go to post and they head out in three-balls from the 1st and 10th.

That means a cramped set of tee-times from 08:45 to 10:46 (local time).

Wind speeds start at around 9mph and drop to 3mph as the afternoon goes on. Temperatures are pretty consistent at 68-72 degrees throughout the golfing day.

Last year, in tougher conditions, a 4-under 67 was enough to secure a three-way tie for R1 leader.

Later in the week there were daily lows of 60 (Matt McCarty R4) and 62 (Keith Mitchell R2).

First Round Leader Bet 1: Max Greyserman @ 40/141.00

Max Greyserman was one of the three players who shared FRL honours when Yokohama CC was used for the first time last year.

The American also shot the joint-second lowest round of the day on Friday, carding a 63. That fast start helped him finish runner-up.

Greyserman also took second place on his tournament debut the year before.

That time, Narashino played host and, once again, Greyserman hit the ground running - a 63 putting him second after the opening lap.

On that evidence alone he's of interest but just two starts ago the 31-year-old was first-round leader at the Biltmore Championship Asheville where he finished 10th.

He's an obvious pick on all of the above so back Greyserman, who tees off at 08:56 from the 1st, at 40s (1/4 Odds, 5 Places).

First Round Leader Bet 2: Matt McCarty @ 55/156.00

Matt McCarty is a long way down the odds board here and the 55s is enough to draw me in.

On debut last year his round scores were bad, good, bad, good. But the good was way better than that; in fact, on the final day it was sensational.

The left-hander shot a 65 on day two to jump 35 spots up the leaderboard and in Sunday's closer he went beserk. A course-record 60 took him from way off the pace to 14th and it would have been a 59 but for a bogey at 18.

It proves he can shoot the lights out at Yokohama and two first-round leads already this season (Truist and Charles Schwab) add to his appeal.

An opening 66 in the Bank of Utah Championship last week could be a decent marker.

McCarty tees off from the 1st at 09:07.

First Round Leader Bet 3: Jordan Spieth @ 40/141.00

Jordan Spieth sounded full of excitement to be back in Japan for the first time since 2019 when he spoke in Tuesday's press conference.

From the food to the golf course, Spieth couldn't have been more complimentary.

While Spieth's sushi intake isn't exactly a measure of his chances, the fact that he's been practising at home on Zoysia grass (the surfaces here apart from the greens) is relevant and the three-time major winner pointed that out.

Spieth, who was third at the Dunlop Phoenix Tournament on his first ever start in Japan, had a break after being knocked out of the playoffs but he's been working hard - especially on his putting - since dusting the clubs off.

His last start produced a 19th place at St. Jude but, notably, he was the first-round leader there after a 65.

Fresh and raring to go, let's hope for a repeat from his 09:18 tee-time (10th).
