Irish Open picks with correlating Scottish form

We need to go all the way back to the 2015 edition, at Royal County Down, to find the last triple-figure priced winner of the Irish Open , so we may be up against it this week.

The defending champion, Rory McIlroy, is attempting to win the event for a third time, as is the 2017 and 2019 winner, Jon Rahm. The field also includes links specialists Robert MacIntyre, Tyrrell Hatton and Shane Lowry, so it's strong line up for the first visit to the Trump International Golf Links & Hotel at Doonbeg.

Previous links form is clearly going to be a huge plus but, as highlighted in the preview, form at the Nexo Championship, staged last month and won by Scott Jamieson, may well be the best recent links form to assess.

The Nexo has been staged at the Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire for the last two years and, like this week's venue, the Scottish track is also a Martin Hawtree designed track with bengrass greens. 

Irish Open bet #1 - Shaun Norris @ 210.0209/1

After he'd hacked up by five strokes in the Mizuno Open to claim his ninth Japan Tour victory in June, Shaun Norris put up disappointing form figures reading MC-38-36-53. His last three outings since have yielded a 25^th in the SunBet Challenge - Wingate Park in his native South Africa, a seventh place finish in the aforementioned Nexo Championship, and a 62^nd place finish in the British Masters last time out. He played better at all three events than those finishes suggest.

He led after round one in South Africa, led by two with just 18 to play at the Nexo in Scotland and was sitting third at the halfway stage of the British Masters two weeks ago.

Prior to his victory in Japan, Norris had finished fourth at the China Open, sixth in The Crowns (on the Japan Tour) and second in the Catalunya Championship, so he's been in fair form throughout 2026. Odds in excess of 200/1201.00 look more than fair for someone who should enjoy the venue.

Irish Open bet #2 - Andy Sullivan @ 300.0299/1

As highlighted in the preview, I backed Bernd Wiesberger at a triple-figure price when the Betfair Exchange market first opened and I was hoping to include him in the column, but he's shortened up since. For my second pick then, I've plumped for another man with form in the book at the Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire - England's Andy Sullivan.

It's six years since the 39-year-old claimed his fourth DP World Tour title but there are reasons to think he can go in again and this venue should suit his eye nicely.

Sullivan finished seventh in the Nexo Championship last year and third there in August so if the two venues are as similar as I think they'll be, he should enjoy it this week.

Sullivan has missed the cut in this event in each of the last three years, but he's demonstrated his liking for links golf in the tournament previously when he was sixth in 2015 edition at Royal County Down, sixth at Ballyliffin in 2018 and second at Lahinch in 2019.

In addition to his third in Scotland last month, Sullivan finished second in the high-profile Dubai Desert Classic in January and third in the Indian Open in March. He's not the forlorn hope is odds of 300.0299/1 suggest.
