The right-handed batsman scored 13,378 runs in his 168 Test appearances, finishing with an average of 51.85. Along with Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis, he is one of only four players to score over 13,000 Test runs.

Ponting finished his career as Australia's leading run scorer in Test and ODI cricket.

At the age of just 17, the nephew of former Test batsman Greg Campbell became the youngest player to feature for Tasmania. He went on to represent his home state for the next 21 years.

After some consistent performances in domestic cricket, he was rewarded with a call up into the one-day squad for a competition in New Zealand against the Kiwis, South Africa and India. His highest score from that tournament was 62, which he achieved from 92 balls.

In December 1995, the Tasmanian was called up to the Test squad to face Sri Lanka at home. He made 96 in his first innings in Perth before being given out leg before wicket.
Ponting's first World Cup success came in 1999 when he was part of Steve Waugh's winning side in England. He later went on to captain Australia to World Cup wins in 2003 and 2007.

The Australian made the number three position in the Test side's batting his own. In 2006 after some consistent performances for his country, he reached the highest rating received by a Test batsman in the last 50 years.

As a captain between 2004 and 2010, he finished with one of the best records of all time with the national team. He led Australia to 48 victories in 77 Tests, including the 5-0 series win over England in 2006-2007 where they regained the Ashes in front of their home crowd in a dominant display over their rivals.

In the latter stages of his career, Ponting represented the Kolkata Knight Riders and Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League. In Australia's Big Bash League he featured for the Hobart Hurricanes. He played Caribbean Premier League cricket for Antigua Hawksbills, while there was also a spell of county action for Surrey in England. In his last first-class innings for the English county, he scored an unbeaten 169 which brought up his 82nd first-class century.
