The right-arm off-break bowler has represented his national team since 1998 and has gone on to play for them in all three formats of the game.

Harbhajan has the second highest number of Test wickets for an off-spinner behind Muttiah Muralitharan. He has made 101 Test appearances so far with over 400 wickets to his name. His best figures came against Australia in 2001 when he took 8/84 in the second innings in the match and a total of 15 wickets across both innings.

The Punjab born bowler was the first Indian to bowl a hat-trick in Test cricket. That was against Australia as he dismissed Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist and Shane Warne in successive deliveries. During that summer against the Australians, he was awarded the Man of the Series prize as he ended with 32 wickets.

In 1997 the Indian made his first-class debut for his home state of Punjab. After some bright performances in domestic cricket, he was soon called up to the India Test squad to
face Australia. He also played with the one-day side a month later against New Zealand.

From 2001 onwards, when fit, he was a regular in the India side in Test and one-day cricket. A run of finger injuries has kept him out of the game for long periods though. The longest of those came in 2003, when he hardly played for India due to the problem.

The off-break bowler has made two centuries in his Test career so far. They both came in a home series against New Zealand. In the First Test against the Kiwis, he hit 115 off the visitors. There were 11 fours and three sixes in his innings. Then in the Second Test, he finished with an unbeaten 112 against the same side at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.

Since its inauguration in 2008, Harbhajan has been with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). In 2013 they won their first IPL title, while in 2011 they also had success in the Champions League Twenty20 tournament.

Due to his commitments with India, he has not been able to play much domestic cricket since becoming a regular with the national team. He did have a spell with Surrey though as he signed for them in 2005 and played through to 2007. In 2012, he also played county cricket for Essex for a season.
