There are plenty of important games with playoff implications taking place this weekend all across America. Even at this stage of the season at least nineteen teams have a chance to make it to the post season, writes Nick Shiambouros.
The Texas Rangers play the Minnesota Twins on Saturday in a huge game for both teams. The Rangers are only four games behind the Angels in the AL West. The Twins are locked in a titanic struggle in the AL Central with Chicago and Detroit.
Scott Feldman starts for Texas and this young man could not be pitching any better. He has a record of 13-4 and an ERA of 3.87 for the year. This right hander has a fantastic range of pitches including a wicked sinker. The Twins start Carl Pavano who has a record of 11-9 for the season.Pavano has a tendency to be a little wayward and the hard hitting Rangers could make him pay dearly. I make Texas a decent bet on Saturday and I will back them accordingly.
On Sunday the Atlanta Braves play the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park in the game of the week in my opinion. The Braves are seven games behind the Phillies in the NL East and are firmly in the running for a wildcard spot.
Jair Jurrjens is on the hill for Atlanta and has superb ERA of just 2.91.This pitcher has really been very impressive against Philadelphia this season and I expect him to hurt them again on Sunday. I think Philadelphia will try to swing the bat early to try to unsettle him but he has only allowed two runs against them all year.
The reliable Joe Blanton starts for Philadelphia and should pitch his usual solid game. I think this could be a low scoring affair but I favour Atlanta for the win with Jurrjens at the controls.
On Monday the Tampa Bay Rays travel to Detroit in a huge game for the Rays. Tampa have fallen ten games behind the Yankees in the AL East but still have a chance to secure a wildcard. The Rays start James Shields who has a record of 8-10 with an ERA of 3.81.If the Rays are going to win this one they need to start scoring runs which have been thin on the ground lately.
The Tigers are leading the AL Central division and show no signs of letting up. Jarrod Washburn starts for Detroit with a record of 9-7. Wasburn has a decent record against Tampa and I expect it to continue on Monday. The way Tampa is swinging the bat at the moment. I have to back Detroit in this game.
All three games are scheduled to be shown live on ESPN America which is now on Sky (430).
