Frankel may be the star attraction today at Newbury, but our SmartPlays come from Newmarket...
The first of them comes in the opening 7f handicap at 13:40, where John Jenkins saddles two, and it is his Great Expectations who is of most interest having caught the eye when fifth at Leicester last time. The winner of a Southwell maiden from two starts last year, Great Expectations ran poorly when well backed on his return but showed much more of what he's about at Leicester, in a race won by subsequent Victoria Cup winner Global Village. Racing close up on what was his turf debut, he tanked along before being produced to lead two furlongs out and just ran out of steam, the impression being that he made his effort too soon in the testing ground. Today's conditions will put less emphasis on stamina at the trip, and he really ought to be up to capitalising on a handicap mark of just 71.
The Sprint Trophy Handicap at 14:45 can go the way of Roger Charlton's Mince. There are admittedly a number of unexposed types in opposition, but Mince's form from last year is strong, advertised by Ballesteros (who she lost out to by a nose at Haydock on her final outing in 2011), and her reappearance second over today's C&D was highly encouraging, seemingly unlucky not to win in fact. Held up, Mince couldn't get a clear run on several occasions and by the time she did get going it was too late, Red Quartet having got first run (reopposing Democretes two lengths behind Mince in third). Mince has gone up in the weights for that effort, but if everything had gone her way last time she would have been even higher, so this looks a good opportunity before she sets about better company.
The James Fanshawe-trained High Jinx is today's final SmartPlay, in the staying handicap at 15:55. He's another whose form from last year has a good look to it, but he just wasn't able to show himself to best effect on his reappearance at Doncaster, the trip clearly too sharp. A winner over 1m 4f last year, High Jinx was outpaced three furlongs out at Doncaster but was finishing best of all, pointing towards today's step up in distance. He remains open to plenty of improvement, with so few miles on the clock, and is just the type his trainer could get a handful of wins out of this year.
