Although a modest performer on the Flat, Royal Deal (14:10 Catterick) was something of a revelation in the pointing field, winning 5 times earlier in the year. The application of cheekpieces appeared to make a difference as he produced his best effort under rules at Doncaster last month, finishing second over what could prove to be an inadequate two and a half miles. Today's step up in trip could see Royal Deal improve further and he looks like one to keep onside.
Well backed on his first start for the James Ewart yard, Sacre Toi (14:40 Catterick) jumped with real alacrity to easily dispose of his rivals at Newcastle, looking like an extremely well treated horse in the process. He couldn't supplement that victory on his only subsequent start at Ayr, but he was possibly inconvenienced by turning out again so soon after his impressive victory. Dropping back to the minimum distance on a sharp track, Sacre Toi can put his fluent jumping to good use and bounce back to winning ways.
Our final SmartPlay comes from what may prove to be the last ever race at Folkestone. Landenstown Star hasn't had many starts over fences, but he did shape nicely at Hereford last time, finishing second to a rival that has run well subsequently. The pair pulled a long way clear that day and it was encouraging to see Tim Vaughan's charge travel well with a bit more enthusiasm with the headgear reapplied. He should be able to build on that effort and make a bold bid to win Folkestone's final race.
