In the 14:40 at Newmarket, Raven Ridge is taken to build on the promise shown in four starts and record the second victory of his short career. He won a Newcastle maiden in good style last season and looked set for better things over longer distances at three. Though failing to justify these expectations in two outings this season, he has run with enough credit to suggest that he can take a race of this ilk off his current mark. Ian's Memory, another unexposed type, could prove the main threat under Ryan Moore.
Salisbury's feature race of the year is the Group 3 Sovereign Stakes at 16:00 and Anjaal is our idea of the winner. This Richard Hannon-trained colt was a progressive juvenile last season, recording two victories, including the July Stakes at Newmarket. Things have not really gone to plan since, but a good third in the Lennox Stakes (subsequent Group 1 winner Garswood finished fourth) demonstrated that he still retains notable ability and the way he shaped at Goodwood suggests that he could do even better over today's trip of a mile.
Sir Mark Prescott saddles Deauville Dancer in the 19:25 at Chepstow and this improving stayer looks likely to back up his recent Nottingham win (achieved in a good time) now tackling two miles for the first time. He won convincingly when last seen and, provided he is not inconvenienced by soft going, will rate as value at anything better than evens. Dour stayer Ivanhoe appears the principal danger.
