Timeform UK SmartPlays: Sunday August 24

Two of Sunday's SmartPlays run at Goodwood

A half-sister to the smart Windhoek, Spiritoftheunion has been brought along steadily, showing run-to-run progress, and she got off the mark at the third attempt at Ripon last time, relishing the step up to a mile and a half as she won by seven lengths...

Timeform bring you bets from Goodwood and Yarmouth on Sunday...

We head to Yarmouth for our first bet of the day as Flow looks to hold strong claims in the seven-furlong handicap at 15:50. Flow had a light campaign last season, and he showed improved form on his third and final start, finishing a close-up second over an extended ten furlongs at York. Flow has built on that promise this term, winning first time out before running creditably twice since, and he remains on a fair mark. He hasn't run over seven furlongs since his two-year-old days, but shows plenty of pace, and the faster tempo may help him settle better in the early stages.

The feature race at Goodwood on Sunday is the Supreme Stakes (16:15) and it is worth backing Godolphin's Steeler on the back of two excellent efforts in ultra-competitive handicaps. Steeler didn't fare too well out in Dubai, but he has upped his game since returning to these shores, finishing third in the Hunt Cup at Royal Ascot before filling fourth at this course in a Heritage Handicap. Steeler was a Group 2 winner as a two-year-old, and he is back to operating at that sort of level now, his creditable efforts off big weights in handicaps worth plenty of credit. The drop back to seven furlongs is a slight worry as Steeler has been shaping as if he might actually be worth a go over further, but he could be a class above these and can bounce back to winning ways.

Our final SmartPlay on Sunday runs in the one-and-a-half mile fillies' handicap at Goodwood (16:45) as we side with handicap debutant Spiritoftheunion. A half-sister to the smart Windhoek, Spiritoftheunion has been brought along steadily, showing run-to-run progress, and she got off the mark at the third attempt at Ripon last time, relishing the step up to a mile and a half as she won by seven lengths. Spiritoftheunion had the race in the bag a long way out at Ripon, looking like a filly that will continue to improve for a while yet, and she hasn't been harshly treated as she makes her handicap bow.
