Our first bet comes in the 18:30 at York, with the Charles Hills-trained Sir Pedro fancied to gain a second career win. The four-year-old ran a cracker in a similar event over C&D last month when fitted with a hood for the first time, posting a career-best effort when finding only Noverre To Go too strong as he went down by just a neck and looking one very much to be interested in. He has failed to back that performance up in two subsequent starts but there have been excuses, catching the eye at Hamilton after a slow start left him with a mountain to climb before ruining his chance by pulling far too hard in a steadily run race at Ascot when last seen. He remains with plenty of scope physically for improvement and it is hoped that he can finally put it all together this evening.
William Haggas' Nezar made an impressive winning debut at Windsor earlier this month and would have been entitled to plenty of respect in Newmarket's 18:40 but, with that one being a non-runner, we can take a chance on Cornish Path. The Henry Candy-trained juvenile confirmed her debut promise when scoring at Kempton last time, being value for more than the three-quarters of a length winning margin having come from a long way back, and the impression is that she remains capable of better still now starting out in nurseries.
Albasharah made it three wins from as many outings when scoring on her seasonal reappearance at Doncaster in May and, after two fine efforts in defeat at Royal Ascot and Haydock, she is taken to return to winning ways in York's listed event at 19:30. The four-year-old was most unfortunate not to be seriously involved in the finish in the Wolferton Handicap at Royal Ascot, being badly hampered two furlongs from home which effectively cost her any chance of going close, and she failed to improve as expected for the step up in trip when racing keenly early on in the Lancashire Oaks last time. She remains unexposed and should get a fair pace to aim at with both Ladys First and Lady Nouf in opposition, and she is of definite interest with the hood on for the first time.
