Timeform UK SmartPlays: Friday July 12

Richard Hannon trains our first selection

"...there are reasons to believe that Richard Hannon’s Indignant may have a bit in hand."

We stick to the July Meeting for our Friday SmartPlays...

The opening fillies' handicap (13:40) looks a competitive affair, but there are reasons to believe that Richard Hannon's Indignant may have a bit in hand. A handy Nottingham maiden winner on her third start at two, Indignant has progressed nicely on her first two starts this year. The Gold Away filly appeared an upwardly-mobile sort when stepping up to seven furlongs on seasonal return at Newbury and finding only one too good in a race that has worked out well.  She built on that when finishing second again at Sandown last time having travelled strongly and only been headed close home. Indignant is clearly a filly going the right way and is likely to go very close today off just a 3-lb higher mark.

Clive Brittain has always held his Royal Ascot winner Rizeena in the highest esteem and she can further justify his faith by giving weight and a beating to her rivals in this afternoon's Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes (14:10). An impressive three-length winner of the listed National Stakes at Sandown, Rizeena carries a Group 2 penalty as a result of her two-length victory over Sweet Emma Rose in the Queen Mary over five furlongs. That was a very likeable performance which suggested that today's six-furlong trip should hold no fears for the daughter of Iffraaj. She can take this on the way to even better things.

Trainer David Barron is a very good placer of his horses and his Robot Boy may take a lot of stopping in the six-furlong handicap at 15:15. This strong-looking Shamardal colt has showed plenty of guts in winning twice from five starts so far this season. He came home a battling nose in front of Lewisham on his return at Doncaster over five furlongs signifying that he may be one to follow and he has largely lived up to that billing since, showing improved form in his last two starts. Robot Boy was well backed and ultimately a comfortable victor by two lengths from Noble Deed at Windsor over six furlongs last time. That run saw him go up 7 lb to a mark of 90, but that shouldn't stop him going very close here.
