Timeform UK SmartPlays: Friday December 21

Today's SmartPlays come from Lingfield

"Small Fury and third-placed Katy Spirit have both won nurseries since, so it takes no great leap to imagine My Sweet Lord still being well handicapped off just a 4 lb higher mark"

It's an early start for today's SmartPlays, focussing as we are on Lingfield's 'matinee' card.

We kick off in the very first race, a mile handicap at 11:25. As you'd imagine, unexposed and progressive types are thin on the ground, making Refreshestheparts a standout in the race. She's been in fine form since switching to the all-weather, winning at Kempton in August and over C&D last week. For the second of those successes, Refreshestheparts was comfortably on top come the line and, as it was an apprentice event, escapes a penalty. Frankly, she should be even shorter for this than she is.

We have over an hour (13:35) to wait for our next selection, which goes in a seven-furlong nursery. By this time of year most two year-olds destined to stay seven furlongs plus will have tackled the trip, but no so in the case of the forward-going My Sweet Lord. He's taken a while to get on the up, but it has long looked as though he's been needing further, and nothing about his win last time over six furlongs at this track changes that given the finishing rattle he showed the collar Small Fury in the dying strides. That rival and third-placed Katy Spirit have both won nurseries since, so it takes no great leap to imagine My Sweet Lord still being well handicapped off just a 4 lb higher mark on his first try over a trip that should draw further improvement from him.

It's a classified stakes for our final SmartPlay at 14:45. It contains the usual raft of regressive and/or unreliable sorts, though the back class of Future Impact makes him a very interesting runner in this otherwise tricky heat. A fair performer in Ireland as a two-year-old, he's largely struggled since, off-loaded by Pat Murphy after just one run back in February. So far, so disinteresting, but the key here is that Future Impact has joined the yard of John Bulter, who could scarcely be in better form. He wouldn't need to come close to the pick of his form to make light work of this lowly field, so Future Impact is worth chancing at a decent price.
