For the first of today's Smartplays we will take the chance that Surge Ahead can supplement his recent success and prevail in the 15:10. Ed Walker's colt wasn't given a hard time on debut, and he duly improved considerably on his second start, winning at Pontefract on testing ground having raced prominently throughout. He steps into nursery company on what could prove to be a fair mark and, with conditions not a problem, Surge Ahead may take a bit of beating.
We don't have to wait long for the next bet as our second SmartPlay runs in the following race on the card. Prodigality has only one win to show for his efforts this season, but he has shaped well on a number of occasions, not least when hindered by his draw in the Portland Handicap at Doncaster last time. This represents a good opportunity for the Ron Harris-trained gelding to get his head back in front.
The 16:55 at Goodwood looks like a good quality three-year-old handicap, but it might be worth siding with Danchai to land the spoils. William Haggas' twice-raced contender won in ready style on his belated return for his new yard, easing clear of his rivals to score by nine lengths. Given his lightly-raced profile, Danchai remains open to plenty of improvement and may be capable of taking this on his handicap debut.
