Aussie Marc Leishman is Dave's headline pick to lead after 18 holes

"The Aussie shot 6-under 66 to be first-round leader in 2013 and went on to finish fourth. And twice in the last four Masters he's posted a lap of 5-under 67."

It's the opening major of the year and Dave Tindall has three picks to be First-Round leader at Augusta National...

Weather forecast for Masters Thursday: Thankfully, the t-storms have cleared by Thursday so sun is predicted for most of the golfing day. It will be gusty though and the forecast suggests wind speeds between 14mph and 16mph from 10am to 4am although it might drop a little either side of that.

Look to Leishman

I want a player who has gone low before at Augusta National as my main FRL tip and one who fits the bill is Marc Leishman.

The Aussie shot 6-under 66 to be first-round leader in 2013 and went on to finish fourth. And twice in the last four Masters he's posted a lap of 5-under 67.

Also fifth after 18 holes in 2014, he's got off to other decent starts and has been in the top 25 after round one in four of the last five Masters.

He's a real course horse after finishes of 5-13-49-9 in the last four years and this season he ranks 16th for first-round scoring on the PGA Tour.

Speaking on Tuesday, he said: "My driving has improved a lot, which I think it had to to contend in these consistently.

"So I'm driving it, hitting it a little longer and a little straighter, which is always nice. Just all around it's been good, my putting's been good. My iron play is sort of the same as how it has been.

"Yeah, I'm excited about what could potentially happen this week."

Leishman goes out in Group 25 at 12.57pm local time.

Get with Garcia

Sergio Garcia has had a bit of a nightmare at Augusta since winning the Green Jacket in 2017 but surely that has to change soon.

Like Leishman, he'll be able to handle conditions if it gets windy. And, also like Leishman, the Spaniard once shot a 66 to be first-round leader.

Looking through his first-round positions, Sergio has been leader (2014), second twice, third, fourth twice, sixth and seventh on the Thursday leaderboard.

Quick starts are common for him here and, more recently, he finished day one in the top five in four straight events between November 2021 and January 2022.

Garcia goes out in Group 26 at 1.08pm local and that's been a good slot for fast starters in past Masters.

Fleetwood can fly early

Tommy Fleetwood has been inconsistent at Augusta National but he's had a couple of really standout moments too.

Last year he scored a hole-in-one at the 16th in round one and twice in his Masters career he's fired a 6-under 66. That gives him appeal here.

Fleetwood has found some good form again this year with five top 25s in his last six strokeplay starts, including a run of 20-22-16 on the Florida Swing.

A 66 gave him the first-round lead at The Players Championship while he also opened with a 66 in the Saudi International. An opening 67 in the previous week's Dubai Desert Classic put him fourth.

Some fast starts along with the ability to go low at Augusta makes him an attractive morning pick. The Englishman heads out at 10.12am local.
