Sedgefield Country Club: The last five champions here have all broken 260 for 72 holes

For those golfers yet to secure their place in the end-of-season FedEx Cup Play-Offs, this week's tournament represents the last-chance saloon.

The Wyndham Championship in North Carolina is once again the final qualifying event for the lucrative three-tournament Play-Offs.

Those who remain in the top 125 of the FedEx Cup standings this Sunday evening will be invited to compete in next week's opening play-off event at Liberty National Golf Club, New Jersey.

From there the top 70 in the ranking head to Maryland, before the season reaches its climax in Atlanta, Georgia - by which point there are merely 30 golfers left standing.

And for the 14th year in a row, the Wyndham Championship takes place at Sedgefield Country Club, around six miles south-west of Greensboro city centre.

This lush, well-wooded parkland course has a rich history which dates back almost a century.

Designed by Donald Ross and opened 95 years ago, it underwent a $3m revamp to prepare the course for its return to the big time in 2008 - following an absence of more than three decades.

Birdie fest

It is neither the longest, nor toughest, of venues on the PGA Tour calendar, and the last five winners of this tournament have all broken 260.

Only one of its 13 previous winners required more than 264 strokes to complete 72 holes.

In last year's instalment, six players posted 24 or more birdies over 72 holes - quite a ratio.

It is also one of the easier courses on the PGA Tour for hitting greens in regulation.

Since the upgrade was carried out 13 years ago, further changes were made to the putting surfaces which switched from Bentgrass to Bermuda a few months before the 2012 tournament.

The smaller-than-average undulating greens slope from back to front and, over the years, Sedgefield has been a course well-suited to the scrambler who can also notch up their fair share of birdies.

Although this tree-lined course has a number of ditches criss-crossing its fairways, the only two sizeable water hazards arrive late in the round.

On the tee

With so much riding on the outcome of this week's event, such as qualifying for the Play-Offs or retaining their Tour status for next season, it becomes more than just another tournament.

Those who don't have to face this added pressure are better placed than those who do, and one golfer already close to booking his spot in next month's Tour Championship at East Lake is Patrick Reed.

Reed is a former winner here, as is Webb Simpson who hails from North Carolina and lives in nearby Charlotte.

Simpson has stood on the Sedgefield podium five times, including each of his last four visits.

Meanwhile, one golfer enjoying the season of his life is 36-year-old Jason Kokrak.

At No 11 in the FedEx Cup standings he's all but certain of his spot at the Tour Championship and has posted three Sedgefield T20s since 2017.

Hideki Matsuyama, whose form dipped amid the distractions of becoming the first Japanese male to win a major championship earlier this year, appears to be back in the groove.

And Kevin Kisner, who stood on the podium here in 2020, should not have too many distractions this week and should be able to put his strong putting skills to good use on Sedgefield's greens.
