With the first major championship of 2021 just one week away, the PGA Tour has arrived in San Antonio. Check out course and current form stats supplied by Andy Swales...

You have to feel a tad sorry for the organisers, sponsors and fans of the Valero Texas Open.

Taking place the week before any major championship is probably not ideal, with regards to attracting the world's elite to your event.

But over the past couple of months, there has also been The Players Championship, two WGC tournaments, plus a pair of prestigious invitational events which enjoy an elevated exemption status over rank and file tournaments on the PGA Tour.

There's also the Honda Classic which doesn't carry with it any special status, but is staged on one of the most highly-regarded layouts in professional golf.

Needless to say, this week's Texas Open at TPC San Antonio has taken a hit, not helped by Monday's news that world No 1 Dustin Johnson has withdrawn.

Only one member of the world's top-20 - Tony Finau - is attending. That said, in-form Texan Jordan Spieth is among the entries to boost interest in his home state. The 27-year-old is a former runner-up in this event.

Also taking part is Matt Kuchar who travelled all the way to the semi-finals at last week's match play bonanza in Austin.

The 42-year-old has struggled of late, and his podium finish on Sunday was his first top-15 since February of last year. He tied-seventh on this course two years ago.

Two course specialists are former champion Charley Hoffman and Ryan Moore.

Hoffman has stood on the San Antonio podium on four occasions, while Moore's poorest finish in four starts here is tied-18th.

Meanwhile, two players who combine a decent Oaks Course history, with solid current form, are Chris Kirk and Ryan Palmer.

Kirk, a former world No 16, is finally enjoying his golf again following some well-publicised off-the-course personal issues.

One other name to ponder is Brendan Steele, winner over the Oaks Course in 2011.

Steele tied-third at PGA National two weeks ago, his second top-five finish this calendar year.

This week's tournament is also the last chance for those to qualify for The Masters, and one of those yet to earn an invite is Steele.

Course details

TPC San Antonio first hosted the Texas Open 11 years ago, shortly after the venue opened.

The Oaks Course, with its narrow tree-lined fairways, was designed by Greg Norman in collaboration with Sergio Garcia.

Norman built a course on which - according to the club website - downhill holes are played into the prevailing wind, while uphill holes travel downwind.

TPC San Antonio was laid out just over 1,000 feet above sea level, with water coming into play on only two holes, which is rare for such a modern course.

However, as the majority of fairways are tight, solid ball striking from the tee is usually paramount for scoring low. Greens are undulating and bunkers are large.

This will be the 11th time that the Oaks Course has hosted a PGA Tour event, with the last nine editions played in either March or April. Twice previously it has been staged the week before The Masters.

Those arriving from Austin, home of last week's Dell Match Play event, will have travelled around 75 miles to get here - one of the shorter journeys between tournaments. The Oaks Course is approximately 14 miles north of San Antonio city centre.
