Shriners Hospitals for Children Open 2020: Form stats for the PGA Tour event in Las Vegas

TPC Summerlin: A well-watered green oasis within the deserts of Nevada

"It is not a course where the pros worry too much about hitting fairways, and it certainly encourages freedom off the tee. So having a hot putter is more important in Las Vegas than at the majority of Tour layouts."

The PGA Tour travels to the outskirts of Las Vegas for this week's Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Hosted, once again, by TPC Summerlin it will be the first of two back-to-back tournaments to be staged in the western state of Nevada.

Laid out approximately 2,700 feet above sea level, TPC Summerlin opened for business in 1991, and is located around seven miles west of downtown Las Vegas which is often referred to as the Gambling Capital of the World.

Situated in the shadows of Red Rock Canyon, the course has larger than average-size Bentgrass greens and generously wide Bermuda grass fairways.

Co-designed by two-time major winner Fuzzy Zoeller and Bobby Weed, Summerlin has been a PGA Tour regular for 28 years.

Initially one of three layouts to co-host this event, it later became one of two, before assuming exclusive rights in 2008.

Sand is more of an issue than greenside water which only comes into play on four holes - including each of the last three.

Surrounded by rugged desert terrain, TPC Summerlin is generally a low-scoring venue which offers plenty of birdie opportunities.

Having a blast

It is not a course where the pros worry too much about hitting fairways, and it certainly encourages freedom off the tee.

Over the past four years, only three courses on the PGA Tour rota have yielded a greater tournament percentage for Greens hit in Regulation than Summerlin.

For those who survived the 36-hole cut, the tournament average (2016-19) for GiR at TPC Summerlin is 73.49%.

A number of venues, such as Riviera and Bay Hill, have a tournament average which is lower than even 60%.

So having a hot putter is more important in Las Vegas than at the majority of Tour layouts.

Kings of Summerlin

A number of course specialists are in action this week, including golf's newest major champion Bryson DeChambeau.

The American was winner here two years ago and it would appear that the big hitting 27-year-old is tailor-made for Summerlin.

As many as eight of those who posted top-10 finishes at the recent US Open are teeing-up in Las Vegas.

One of these is the ever-reliable Webb Simpson who is a former winner over Summerlin, where there have also been three other T-10s for the former US Open champion.

Patrick Cantlay has never finished lower than second in three starts at this tournament, while defending champion Kevin Na is a two-time winner here in the desert.

In-form pros

One other name to ponder with is Tony Finau who is long overdue a second PGA Tour title.

The 31-year-old from Salt Lake City continues to amass top-10 finishes, which include four from his last eight outings. He also tied-for-ninth at Summerlin 12 months ago.

Another strong performer in recent weeks has been Harris English who last tasted victory in November 2013.

English is currently a career-high No 36 in the World Ranking, thanks to some solid results since returning from lockdown.

This summer's two highlights for the 31-year-old have been a runner-up finish in the Northern Trust event - when an inspired Dustin Johnson won by 11 shots - plus fourth place at the US Open.
