The putting surfaces at Victoria are large, undulating and usually play a huge role in the outcome of the tournament.

"In each of the past three years, for those completing 72 holes, the champion has led the way in the Strokes Gained: Putting category (Tom Lewis, 2018; Steve Brown, 2019; George Coetzee, 2020)."

The Victoria Course at Vilamoura welcomes the European Tour for this week's event close to Portugal's southern coast. Words and stats supplied by Andy Swales...

The fourth and final tournament of the European Tour's Iberia Swing takes place in the Algarve, with the 15th staging of the Portugal Masters.

All 14 previous editions have been played at Vilamoura's Victoria Course, which is also the venue this week.

Although this event has always been held during autumn, this will be the first time it has taken place as late as November.

Course details

The Arnold Palmer-designed course opened for business in 2004, and within a year had made its professional debut by hosting the World Cup of Golf.

Located around 12 miles from Faro, and approximately two miles from the coast, the layout is largely flat, exposed and has generously wide fairways - although a few of these have been slightly narrowed in recent years.

Prior to the 2019 Portugal Masters, a number of other modifications were made to the course.

A stronger, more resilient strain of Bermuda grass was grown in the rough, as well as to areas around the greens.

The result being that the course became marginally tougher, but generally remains a low-scoring venue.

The greens are larger than the European Tour average, and are also undulating, so putting usually plays a significant part in deciding the outcome of the tournament.

In each of the past three years, for those completing 72 holes, the champion has led the way in the Strokes Gained: Putting category (Tom Lewis, 2018; Steve Brown, 2019; George Coetzee, 2020).

This well-bunkered course has water in play on seven holes, mainly on the back nine where there are some sizeable lakes and ponds.

On the tee

A distinctly average field tees-up on Thursday with world No 58 Min Woo-Lee the highest-ranked golfer taking part.

That said, there are a number of in-form golfers competing this week including former top-25 pro Matt Wallace.

The Englishman recently enjoyed strong back-to-back performances on the PGA Tour, and tied-fourth on his most recent outing at the Zozo Championship. Two weeks earlier he'd tied-14th in Las Vegas.

Another English golfer, Laurie Canter, continues his search for a maiden European Tour title, having finished second three times during the past 14 months.

Three of his last four starts have yielded top-five finishes and, on his most recent trip to the Portugal Masters, was runner-up to defending champion George Coetzee.

Latest betting for Portugal Masters

To continue the English theme, Andy Sullivan and Andrew Johnston may be worth investing in.

Sullivan is a former winner here while Johnston's results are finally starting to improve again.

The 32-year-old Londoner has struggled to back up his breakthrough season of 2016 when he claimed his maiden title at Valderrama and tied-eighth in The Open at Turnberry. But his golf has improved significantly in recent tournaments.

Two non-Brits who may be worth following are Swede Joakim Lagergren and Spaniard Jorge Campillo.

Lagergren, who stood on the Vilamoura podium in 2020, was runner-up at St Andrews recently, while Campillo tied-second last time out in Mallorca.

Campillo's most recent Tour title came in Qatar 20 months ago and his form of late suggests he is moving in the right direction again.
