Galgorm Castle Golf Club in County Antrim samples its first taste of European Tour action this week, when it stages the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.

The tournament was originally scheduled for the end of May but was postponed along with many other sporting events following the outbreak of Covid-19.

But when the Ryder Cup was called off in early July, Ireland's national open returned to the calendar with a new venue and considerably reduced prize money.

However, Galgorm Castle is not an untried layout, having been part of the Challenge Tour's annual rota since 2013.

Just a few weeks ago, the Ballymena venue hosted the Northern Ireland Open and it now gets the opportunity to make its debut on the European Tour.

This award-winning parkland course was designed by Simon Gidman and opened in 1997.

Water is a regular theme at Galgorm Castle which is laid out close to the rivers of Maine and Braid.

The venue also has five lakes, with water coming into play on 12 holes - and possibly more, depending on how wayward a golfer is.

Lowry returns

The still Open champion Shane Lowry is by far the highest-ranked golfer taking part, although the 33-year-old from County Offaly will have to share top billing with three-time major winner Padraig Harrington.

Harrington had been expecting to captain the European Ryder Cup team this week in Wisconsin.

Instead, the 49-year-old Dubliner makes his first competitive appearance since early March.

Two absentees are Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy, who have decided to remain Stateside rather than travel across the Atlantic.

Rahm is the reigning Irish Open champion, and was all set to play in May before the event was postponed.

Contenders

All eight golfers to have won Challenge Tour events at Galgorm are teeing-up this week, including New Zealander Ryan Fox and Swede Joakim Lagergren.

Fox arrives back from the States where he missed the cut at the US Open, while 28-year-old Lagergren tied-for-third in his most recent outing on the European Tour two weeks ago.

Both men have previously tasted victory at European Tour events, albeit in tournaments with mediocre fields.

A number of in-form golfers are in Ballymena, among them George Coetzee, John Catlin, Wil Besseling and Laurie Canter.

Coetzee has posted four straight podium finishes - which includes a brace of victories across two Tours - while Catlin remains in good shape following his maiden European Tour title over the tricky Valderrama layout earlier this month.

A victory for Catlin would mean a 'Galgorm double' for the United States, following Tyler Koivisto's Challenge Tour success at the course just a handful of weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Dutch pro Besseling and England's Canter are first and third respectively in the Tour category for Strokes Gained (Off The Tee).

The 30-year-old Canter was runner-up to Coetzee at the Portugal Masters in Vilamoura on September 13.
