After travelling around England and Wales for the past six weeks, the rank and file members of the European Tour head to Spain for a trio of events on the Iberian Peninsula.

This week's Andalucia Masters, which takes place in the Spanish region of Cadiz, will be followed by two tournaments in Portugal.

Sponsored by Estrella Damm, the Masters is being held at arguably Spain's most famous golfing venue - Valderrama - and will offer a prize fund slightly higher than those available on the recent UK Swing.

Course management

Valderrama has always demanded great accuracy from tee-to-green, and has an abundance of cork trees running alongside its narrow fairways.

Water hazards are only present on three holes, although the venue's small, fast and undulating greens allow for little margin of error.

Good course management is almost a prerequisite to performing well here, which is why Lee Westwood should be one of the front-runners this weekend.

Back in 1996, in what was only his second appearance at the course, he tied-for-second, and was runner-up again four years later. There's been six other top-eight finishes for Westwood here too.

Another experienced campaigner you can add to a short list of players who possess strong course management skills, is Martin Kaymer.

The German has also been a runner-up at Valderrama and, last week at The Belfry, posted his first podium finish since June 2019, when he was third at Muirfield Village - a traditionally tough venue where good course strategy is usually rewarded.

Kaymer is performing well in some of the important Strokes Gained statistical categories on the European Tour this season.

He leads both SG: Approach and SG: Total, and is currently third in SG: Tee-To-Green.

Young stars

Three of the younger brigade who have played well since the end of lockdown are: Rasmus Hojgaard, Sami Valimaki and Thomas Detry.

At the age of 19, Hojgaard claimed his second European Tour success on Sunday, which followed on from three successive top-six finishes during the UK Swing. Even taking into account that recent tournaments on Tour have been weaker than normal, it's still rare for a player this young to be so consistent.

Meanwhile Valimaki, winner in Oman not long before lockdown, finished sixth and second in Wales recently, and will join Hojgaard as a Valderrama debutant this Thursday.

Detry, who is still searching for a maiden Tour title following seven top-three finishes, tied-eighth in this event last year

Course history

Designed by Robert Trent Jones, the course began life as Sotogrande New in 1974, before being renamed Las Aves, which later became Valderrama.

In 1988 it made its debut on the European Tour, staging the prestigious Volvo Masters for the first time.

It has also hosted the WGC-American Express Championship, Spanish Open and, in 1997, the Ryder Cup.

More than 25 top tier events have been held at Valderrama over the past 32 years, including 18 season-ending finales on the European Tour.
