Andalucia Masters First-Round Leader Tips: Donaldson to dig it out

Jamie Donaldson can grind out a strong early score
  • The DP World Tour stays in Spain and Dave Tindall has three picks to be First-Round Leader at Valderrama
  • Jamie Donaldson can show his experience on day one
  • Soren Kjeldsen is a course horse and was fifth at Wentworth recently
  • Edoardo Molinari's straight hitting can help him start fast

Weather forecast for Thursday: It's set to be a fairly standard day at Valderrama for round one. That means plenty of sunshine (peaking in the high 70s) and a breeze of around 10mph which will add to the grind on a course where 6-under took the title last year. With no obvious weather bias, tee-times don't look significant.

Jump in for Jamie

Without doubt, Valderrama will be a tough, tough test and some players will find it a culture shock after playing in so many birdie-fests.

But Jamie Donaldson can often thrive in these conditions and has shown that with a 10th place two years ago and a fourth in 2017.

It doesn't always come off for the former Ryder Cup hero but despite a few missed cuts he's posted sixth-place finishes at the Scottish Open and the Open de France in recent months.

The top six at Le Golf National last month was fuelled by an opening 66 which put him fourth after 18 holes and Donaldson shot the same score on day one of the Made in Himmerland two starts earlier.

Donaldson will appreciate the attritional conditions more than most and can hopefully give us something to cheer from his late 2.20pm tee-time.

He's worth a play at 100/1.

Side with Soren

I'm going to play the short-hitting veteran angle again with a punt on Soren Kjeldsen.

The Dane has some amazing history at Valderrama with a win, two second places and a fourth.

Okay, that's from a while ago but he closed with a 68 last year and only a month ago Kjeldsen opened 68-64 in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth - a course that correlates well with Valderrama.

A top five finish at Wentworth shows he can still cut it at this level if the course suits and this is an obvious one given the emphasis on accuracy over power.

Kjeldsen, who is a morning starter at 10am, is 80/1.

Make it Molinari

Let's complete the slight timewarp feel by closing with a punt on 2010 Ryder Cup star Edoardo Molinari.

The Italian has plenty of life in him yet, as shown by an impressive fourth place at last week's Open de Espana.

His previous start in Spain was a sixth in the Catalunya Championship while he likes Valderrama too.

It's hard to find anyone with consistent numbers on this track but Molinari has made his last six cuts here and three of the last four were tied 26th or better, including tied 20th last year.

His strong play from the tee is a big plus and he's been ranked 1st for Driving Accuracy in two of his last four starts. Both were on tree-lined courses - Club de Campo and Wentworth - so the visuals here will suit.

Molinari is a 50/1 chance for FRL. He tees off at 9.20am.
