CC Sabathia is on the hill for the Yankees and has a record of 11-7 with an ERA of 3.95
"Clay Buchholtz starts for Boston but he has been a little erratic in his last few games. I think the Yankee hitters may be able to get to him early and establish a good lead. My money will be on New York in this one in what could be a high scoring affair."
Two of the biggest names in baseball, the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, square up to each other in the first of three matches being played this weekend that are previewed by Nick Shiambouros.
The Boston Red Sox face their bitter rivals the New York Yankees on Saturday in what promises to be a pulsating encounter at Yankee stadium. These two teams are engaged in a titanic struggle in the AL East. The Yankees are leading the division by two games but that could change by the end of the weekend.
CC Sabathia is on the hill for the Yankees and has a record of 11-7 with an ERA of 3.95. The left- hander from California was signed for a jaw dropping $161m over seven years at the end of last year from Milwaukee. Sabathia does not have a very good record against the Sox but has been pitching very well lately. Clay Buchholtz starts for Boston but he has been a little erratic in his last few games. I think the Yankee hitters may be able to get to him early and establish a good lead. My money will be on New York in this one in what could be a high scoring affair.
On Sunday the Detroit Tigers host the Minnesota Twins in an AL Central clash. The Tigers are leading the division but the Twins are only four games behind. Jarrod Washburn makes his first home start for Detroit after Seattle traded him last month. The veteran left -hander had a shocking start for his new team in a 8-2 defeat against Baltimore on Tuesday but I am more than prepared to forgive that effort as he has a season ERA of just 2.93 and is one of the best left-handed pitchers in baseball.
I think Washburn will give the Twins hitters plenty to think about if he settles in early and I am sure the Detroit home crowd will help him settle his nerves as he steps on the mound. I will be backing the Tigers in this crucial game as they try to hold on their lead in the division.
Later on Sunday night the Los Angeles Angels host the Texas Rangers in an important AL West encounter. The Angels have a four game lead over the Rangers and my money will firmly be on Los Angeles. John Lackey is on the hill for the Angels and he has been in irresistible form recently. Lackey has a huge variety of pitches and a 90mph fast ball for good measure.
The Rangers start Derek Holland, who has a record of 4-7 with an ERA of 5.64. Holland has been a little shaky in his last couple of starts and may be vulnerable. The good news for Texas is that they are a team who is capable of scoring plenty of runs. This promises to be a very entertaining affair and a great way to end the weekend.
All three games are scheduled to be shown live on ESPN America which is currently on Sky (417).
