Fabian Quoss after his English Poker Open win
Cody and Quoss started Sunday's final table almost even in chips, the Brit holding 1,416,500 and Quoss just 500 less and it was rather unsurprising that the pair were the last two men standing in the tournament
Over the weekend a total of 195 players descended on the Grosvenor Victoria Casino in London to participate in the Main Event of the GUKPT Grand Final. By the time the dust had settled after three days of play it was the London-based German pro Fabian Quoss who had won each of the all of the chips in play and the £119,996 first place prize.
Quoss is one of many German players who live in close proximity to each other in the British capital, being part of an exclusive group that includes the likes of Sebastien Ruthenberg, Tobias Reinkemeier and EPT London champion Benny Spindler. Spending time with these excellent players has obviously helped Quoss' game because he has been putting in some very impressive results over the past couple of years, most of them in the UK.
In 2009 he came second in the £1,000 Six-Max event at EPT London for £37,500, finished seventh in the 2010 WPT London Main Event (£26,144), won the 2010 English Poker Open (£220,650) and came fifth in the £20,000 High Roller event again at EPT London. Now he has another title to his name after taking down this star-studded event.
Despite World Poker Tour Prague and other major tournaments taking place throughout Europe some of Europe's best players took to the felt in London including former European Poker Tour champions David Vamplew, Liv Boeree, Kevin MacPhee and Rupert Elder and Quoss' heads-up opponent the Triple Crown winner Jake Cody.
Cody and Quoss started Sunday's final table almost even in chips, the Brit holding 1,416,500 and Quoss just 500 less and it was rather unsurprising that the pair were the last two men standing in the tournament. Both young men have great respect for each other's game and that was shown when they took a small break from the action to make a deal with each other to split the remaining prize pool. After striking the deal the one-on-one battle lasted around two hours before Quoss started to open up a lead for himself. The final hand saw Cody four-bet all in with king-jack and Quoss call with ace-queen, two aces on the flop left Cody drawing extremely thinly and although Cody paired his king on the rive it was too little too late and he will go down in the record books as the runner-up.
Quoss's win takes his live tournament winning close to $1,500,000 and he will certainly be one to watch in 2012 both live and online.
