The crowd at Monmore witnessed a super performance from Barbies Man in the Gold Cup.
"First to the obvious and Jumeirah Brett was simply awesome. To do what Julie Bateson's dog did on debut was amazing, and the time ended up being the quickest of the night. Not bad for a pup - and he missed his break! Write the name down."
Barbies Man, big-priced winner of Monmore's Gold Cup on Friday, was given good press by The Lord last week - and our man 'in the know' is back again with some more pearls of wisdom.
We kick off this week with a look back at Belle Vue's Gold Collar fixture on Thursday and Sky viewers were treated to some great efforts. Glenroe Ginger and big-race winner Southwind Harry were two stars of the show, but there were other clues for the future in behind the obvious.
First to the obvious and Jumeirah Brett was simply awesome. To do what Julie Bateson's dog did on debut was amazing, and the time ended up being the quickest of the night. Not bad for a pup - and he missed his break! Write the name down.
The first TV race was full of quality and, while Blood Of Kings again showed great pace up and almost won, the winner Killieford Fire is clearly a nice type and can progress.
But the 'dark one' who many will have missed is Runemragged. Frank Wright's dog took a real whack at the first bend but stayed on with great purpose and finished close up to the principals. The sprint was won in style by Rotar Wing who made it three out of three in this country, but the race also witnessed a real return to form of Officer Donagh who chased home the winner strongly and will win next time.
Sunoak Crystal won the bitches' stake as she liked, but it was noticeable that Coolavanny Fly went to the bend with Was Not Me and Elaine Parker's bitch is worth keeping on the right side of.
It was great to see Platinumlancelot stretch his unbeaten record to 12 and a modern-day record, but next in the notebook goes Carbarns Tom after he chased home impressive six-bend winner Wordsandatune. Nottingham next for Charlie Lister's dog?
And while the brilliantly quick Glenroe Ginger showed his class once again in what was an early Laurels trial, Ardkill Tunoco lost no caste in defeat and his return to the big-time is imminent.
Nottingham are staging the Puppy Classic currently and it's a top-class entry with the likes of Farloe Razl and Loyal Rebel leading the way.
But one of the less exposed sorts of Dalcash Scolari. Mark Wallis's showed bundles of pace in his heat and win or lose in the semis (500m tests his stamina), he will win races elsewhere.
Romford has also been busy with open races at Friday's Champion Stakes looks top drawer, but the supporting puppy final was interesting. Guinness Time won it, but I like the pace shown by Lethal Spurs and that initial zip will serve him well in the future.
