Flying Winner's TV Trophy win on Tuesday really was a victory for Doncaster.
The south Yorkshire track was making its first appearnace in front of the Sky cameras, so how fitting that a greyhound trained by a Yorkshireman in Chris Lund grabbed gold. The locals raised the roof once she launched her winning challenge at the top bend.
She was, quite simply, awesome. Her impressive trackcraft is one thing, but her abillity to hold her position amongst marathon hounds will make her so difficult to defeat. She has every chance of racking up a really nice unbeaten sequence. British record anyone?
Of course, on the night, she was no working man's price. Swift Blackfoot was, however, and Charlie Lister's runner followed up a game run in the Dorando to finish second ahead of Midway Skipper, although the latter should continue to improve. She finished well after not dominating as she did in the heats.
So future winners from the night?
Flying Winner is obvious, but MIDWAY SKIPPER is another nice type open to improvement at just over two years of age, while BOHERDUFF MONTI caught the eye massively in the sprint.
There is no question that Boherbradda Mac is the country's leading sprinter just now and is not about to pave the way for a young pretender. But BOHERDUFF MONTI is definitely next in line to his crown judged on recent performances for Jenny White at Oxford and Doncaster.
LONDON RHYS might not have won the opening four-bend puppy stake but ran well from start to finish and, given it was his first visit to Doncaster, he impressed and should pay to follow over a testing four bends or easy six. Likewise, for debut, HEAD ITON HATTON could not have fared much better.
The four-bend race won by Sibsey Showtime saw several of the field catch the eye. The winner ran well and remains seen at his best over a four-bend gallop, but SIR ALF continues to defy advancing years and never gave up after seemingly to lose his position at the three-quarters pole, while CORTSWAY GIANTS really is the type to catch pigeons on his day. In the same race, CLYDEVIEW's early zip gave the impression he will be winning again soon.
Killough Belles has been a favourite for a while, and continues to be. She looks an Oaks bitch for certain. Barrie Draper's charge won the bitches' stake in style, but there were definite signs that FRISBY FOXWATCH is coming back to her best and a return to a soft six bends could reap dividends.
ONTHERIVER TEN, a litter sister of Midway Skipper, was not disgraced behind all-the-way winner Honcho Dora, while the winner, too, could be one to follow over four and six bends. Charles Fanous's dog has not had that much racing.
ROUGH MOURINHO was the one to take out of the top division of the four-bend stake, while GABBA GABBA HEY stayed on well first time over the trip in the non-televised puppy stayers.
